Manchester United are still in the market for quality players and reports have suggested that manager Jose Mourinho is looking in the direction of Benfica’s right back Nelson Semedo. The Portuguese international had a brilliant season last term as he scored 2 goals and contributed an impressive six assists from the defensive position to help Benfica to the treble comprising the Portuguese Primeira Liga, The Portuguese Cup, and the Portuguese Super Cup.
Reports from Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo indicate that Mourinho has given the green light to the club to make a £30 million bid for the services of Nelson Semedo and looks to conclude the deal quickly, as the likes of PSG, Bayern Munich, city rivals Manchester City and Barcelona may be looking to make an offer for the impressive Portuguese defender.
The 23 year old Portuguese international has been described as a skillful wingback with decent speed and stamina which he uses to his advantage to make those tireless marauding and incisive runs down the opponent’s flanks. These were evident from his attacking contributions last season.
His runs albeit with lesser strength have been compared to those being made by Man United’s Antonio Valencia who is the current right back at the club. However, he makes up for that with skills and productivity in the attacking positions.
Reports indicated that Mourinho had earlier insisted on the importance of having two quality players for each position on the pitch. Matteo Darmian who was signed as a right back has been described as more of a versatile player across the back four positions, and Mourinho is supposedly interested in landing the Portuguese right back to add more depth to his squad ahead of the forthcoming campaign with dates in Europe and domestically.
