The PL Match Day 30 fixtures commenced and ended with a bang as major upsets sprung and some records were broken. The African players in the PL played major roles in actualizing some of the unexpected results. There were few African goal scorers this weekend but they were all spectacular and classy goals by the league’s standard.
We have chosen our own eleven most performing Africa players from the league this weekend. The whole 11 are from the sides which garnered at least a point from the Match Day. From defence, to midfield, to attack, the players were impressive last weekend and therefore deserve a mention in our PL African team of the Match Day 30.
SADIO MANE played a major role as Liverpool thrashed Everton at Anfield in the Merseyside Derby. The Senegalese attacker opened the scoring with a very impressive run from midfield into the 18 yard box with body feints to displace the defence before accurately slotting past Robles who had no chance of saving the ball. One of the best goals of the weekend.
WILFRIED ZAHA was on hand to orchestrate Chelsea’s first defeat at Stamford Bridge in the league this season and end a 100% run. The Ivorian provided the first goal with some decent ball control and composure to slot past Courtois in goal. The goal was a difficult one to pull off, but he did it exceptionally. He also provided the assist for the winner.
WILFRED NDIDI was on hand to provide a goal as he scored one of the best long rangers of the season. A well taken and placed shot from some yards outside the 18 yard box. Grant in goal for Stoke City had no chance. Leicester would then go on from there and secure all 3 points to continue their recent resurgence.
MAHREZ played his part to ensure the foxes emerged with 3 points from the encounter with his runs, dribbles, twists and turns, key passes and also pulled a decent save from Robles in goal. The Algerian played his part nicely.
WANYAMA had his say and ensured Spurs emerged with 3 points from Turf Moor, handing Sean Dyche’s men a rare defeat at home recently this season after a good run in front of their home fans. He was solid in the middle of the park to ensure the defence was able to put up with Burnley’s attacking forays. The outcome was a 2 goal lead, clean sheet and 3 points in the bag to pile more pressure on the league leaders.
MATIP played his role in the Merseyside Derby to ensure Liverpool conceded less than they scored to secure 3 points. The Cameroonian alongside his defensive peers were able to keep a lethal and recently formidable Lukaku quiet and end his consecutive run of goals in the league. Not an easy feat judging by his recent form.
SCHLUPP at full back played the entire duration of the 90, as Palace emerged with 3 points from the Bridge. Not an easy one to pull off as Chelsea pressed on for the equalizer. The Ghanaian’s efforts in defence contributed to his side garnering maximum points on the day. A surprise win!
BENALOUANE started again for Leicester and was pivotal in defence against Stoke’s attack as the foxes emerged with 3 points and a clean sheet in hand. The Tunisian was key to Leicester’s defensive prowess on the day.
EL MOHAMADY played his part in full back position as Hull City came from behind to defeat West Ham and garner all 3 points, keeping the hopes alive for survival this season. The Egyptian played his part nicely as he contributed to both attack and defence.
OUMAR NIASSE contributed to Hull’s win over Stoke. The Senegalese’ efforts were enough to ensure his side ran away 2:1 winners on the day.
ALLAN NYOM played his part in defence for West Brom over the weekend. The Cameroonian put in a solid defensive shift at full back which contributed to his side keeping a clean sheet and emerging with 1 point from Old Trafford. They were under attack for much of the game but managed to emerge unscathed.
We look forward to Match Day 31 in a few days and hope for more significant numbers from the African talents in the EPL.
