Spanish International and FC Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique, has backed Ernesto Valverde to be a hit at Barcelona as he opined that the new manager would bring success to the club. He claimed that the manager would be a decent option for the position of the Catalans’ next head coach.
According to reports and speculations, Barcelona are set to name a new manager and successor to Luis Enrique on Monday, and Ernesto Valverde has been tipped to take over from Enrique at the Nou Camp Manager’s office. The report was fuelled the more as the 53-year-old made his decision to quit his position as Athletic Bilbao boss recently, and Pique’s comments have further added weight to the assertions that Valverde could be at the helm at the Camp Nou next season.
‘He played here for Barcelona as a player and I think he could be a good option, as could others.
‘I can’t decide myself on anyone and I don’t know who will be the next manager. It’s not my job and I haven’t put a lot of thought into it.’
Valverde played for Barcelona for two years between 1988 and 1990. He also guided Espanyol and ensured they reached the UEFA Cup final in 2007, although it ended in a penalty shootout defeat to Sevilla. In his managerial career, prior to his Bilbao move, he had won 3 Greek Super League titles and two Greek cups with Olympiacos.
He managed Bilbao as they emerged victorious over Barcelona in the 2015 Spanish Super Cup.
