Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has revealed that he’s optimistic about Lionel Messi’s international future and will discuss with the Barcelona forward about a possible return to the Argentina senior national team.
It can be recalled that Lionel Messi decided to go on a sabbatical from the Argentina national team after a disappointing campaign at the Russia 2018 World Cup, as they were knocked out by eventual winners France in the round of 16.
Lionel Messi, 31, has not disclosed if he’ll participate in the upcoming Copa America scheduled for June but interim coach Scaloni told reporters in the course of Thursday’s Copa America draws that Messi could make a return in a friendly game in March.
“We will speak with Leo in the days before the March list. When the time is right we will speak,” Scaloni said.
“I hope he can be here but more than that, we want him to be happy. I have a good feeling.”
Lionel Messi is yet to win a major honour with the senior team although he has an Olympic gold medal to his name, as well as an Under 20 World Cup.
He has played in 4 World Cups and 4 Copa America tournaments for Argentina. In all, Lionel Messi has ended up losing with his side in 4 finals, prompting him to consider his future with Argentina.
Meanwhile, Argentina last won a major senior honour in 1993 which was the Copa America. They have been drawn in Group B and will face Colombia, Paraguay, and Qatar who were invited to participate in the competition.
Brazil are the hosts of the competition.
