Arsenal have reportedly entered the race to sign Manchester City center-back Eric Garcia, reports in Spain have revealed.
The 20-year-old is in the final six months of his contract with the Citizens and they are open to his departure for a fee of around £4.4million.
La Liga giants Barcelona were the overwhelming favorites with Ronald Koeman keen to bring in the defender before the winter transfer window shuts on Monday. However, with the club’s elections being delayed, any move may be unlikely this month.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Gunners have now joined the race for the young center-back. It can be recalled that Mikel Arteta played a part in the player’s development in his time at Manchester City before leaving to become Arsenal boss in 2019.
The report pointed out that Garcia would be perfect for Arsenal’s philosophy just as he would fit in at PSG who are also interested in acquiring him.
Last week, reports emerged that Mauricio Pochettino was keen on the defender, having watched him grow in the Premier League when he was the manager of Tottenham Hotspur.
The report went on to claim that Arsenal are very close with the player’s agent Ivan de la Pena.
Meanwhile, it is believed that Garcia will not rule out any potential move but will favor a move to his boyhood club Barcelona where he developed between 2008 and 2017 before making the move to England.
As for Barcelona, an announcement was made last week that the club elections won’t go ahead due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Therefore, the acquisition of players appears unlikely as caretaker president Carles Tusuquets doesn’t have it in his power.
With very few days to the closure of the winter transfer window, Garcia’s future will become clearer and we wait to see where he ends up this January or if he will stay put until the full expiration of his contract.
