Barca insert anti-Pique clause in new contracts due to defender’s off-field engagements
Barcelona have reportedly taken action after growing frustrated with Gerard’s Pique entrepreneurial aspirations. The defender has been heavily involved with work off the pitch in the past few years such as helping in revamping tennis’ Davis Cup competition and purchasing a controlling stake in Andorra FC.
According to ABC, his off-pitch engagements have angered the club as they believe his priorities have shifted from football. Therefore, in a bid to prevent new signings from toeing a similar path, Barcelona contracts will include an ‘anti-Pique’ clause that restricts non-footballing commitments.
It was also reported that Pique’s disappearance after the Spanish Super Cup in 2018 angered the club. He was contacted by Ernesto Valverde after traveling to Orlando without consent. He told his manager he would miss just one day of training.
Barcelona are also working on having greater control of the social media accounts of their players. The club are determined to protect their image due to some mishaps in the past, one of which was Pique’s tweets saying Neymar would remain at the Camp Nou just days before he signed for Paris-Saint Germain in 2017.
