Barca set to complete deal for Martin Braithwaite
According to ESPN sources, Barcelona are close to completing the surprise signing of Martin Braithwaite from Leganes after being granted permission to bring in a forward outside of the transfer window.
The Catalan will give the striker’s €18 million release clause to La Liga if relegation-threatened Leganes stick to their stance to not negotiate.
Leganes already lost Youssef En-Nesyri to Sevilla in January and do not want to lose Braithwaite, 28, who has already agreed terms with Barcelona and is expected to join his new teammates immediately and be in line for a debut in the game against Eibar on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Leganes will not be able to sign a replacement. This is because the special rule does not apply to clubs whose players leave when their release clause is met. Quique Setien insisted that he wanted Braithwaite and this is because he can play as a wide man and through the middle.
Braithwaite joined Leganes in January 2019 from English Championship side Middlesbrough on a loan deal before the move was made permanent in the summer for €5m. He has scored 13 goals in 41 appearances for Leganes.
