Blow for Chelsea as Mertens is set to renew Napoli contract

Chelsea’s Frank Lampard will have to turn his attentions elsewhere as reports suggest that Dries Mertens is set to sign a new deal with Napoli. The Blues were strongly interested in the 33-year-old but he’s set to remain in Italy as he’ll be signing a new deal worth £140,000 a week.

It appears that Chelsea were not the only team interested in a move for Mertens as Inter Milan had eyes on the Belgium international and were prepared to offer him a three-year deal worth £170,000 according to a report by The Guardian.

Napoli have managed to convince the forward to stay and it’s not a major surprise as he has been an asset since joining the club in 2013. Mertens has scored 90 goals for Napoli and also played his part in ensuring that they become Champions League regulars.

It would have been a plus for the Blues if they had snatched him from under Napoli’s noses as the likes of Willian, Olivier Giroud, and Pedro might be leaving in the summer.

Willian and Giroud are interested in long-term deals at Stamford Bridge despite Chelsea’s policy of not offering such deals to players above 30. They might be forced to compromise and hand the players the deals they’ve demanded.

Willian wants a three-year deal but Chelsea are willing to offer him a two-year deal. Frank Lampard recently noted that the contract situations of the big players at the club are being considered before they expire.

Meanwhile, as plans for a return to action in the Premier League continues to progress, Lampard has revealed that everyone is ready to return although the health and safety of the players remain a concern.

The Blues currently sit fourth in the Premier League and are five points behind Leicester City who are in third. They are closely pursued by the likes of Manchester United and Wolves in fifth and sixth respectively. They lead the Red Devils with just three points.
