Carragher – Dias is the best defender in the Premier League

Jamie Carragher has hailed Ruben Dias as the best center-back in the Premier League and even rates him higher than Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.

The 23-year-old has helped in the transformation of Man City’s defensive fortunes since joining from Benfica in a deal worth £62million in the summer.

Dias has brought organization and leadership to the backline. He has played his role perfectly in the successes that the Citizens have enjoyed thus far.

Dias has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season and has helped in putting Pep Guardiola’s men one win away from the 2020/21 Premier League title, as well as in the UEFA Champions League final for the first time.

The player has been so good that Carragher loves the Portuguese star despite City’s rivalry with Liverpool.

‘I love him,’ he told CBS Sports, via the Daily Star. ‘I think he’s been the best player in the Premier League this season, I really do believe that.’

‘I think he’s had a huge effect on Manchester City. Even when he speaks and you watch him play you can’t believe he’s 23.

‘John Stones next to him is 27-28 and you feel like it’s the other way around with John Stones and that’s no disrespect to John Stones.’

Whilst comparing Dias and Van Dijk, the latter being the most impressive center-back in the Premier League in recent seasons, he noted that the Dutchman was more physically endowed and that Dias had to rely on hard work to ensure that he is ahead of attackers and maintains concentration in the big moments.

According to Carragher, Dias is currently the best center-back in the Premier League by a long way and identified him as a new breed of a defender.

‘What I would say is that Van Dijk has been blessed with physical attributes that Dias hasn’t so in some ways I’m more impressed with Dias,’ he added.

‘When you watch Van Dijk, it’s like watching a Rolls-Royce, you just think the way he moves. Most players don’t have that and Dias probably hasn’t got that so probably has to concentrate more and be side on constantly.

‘We have seen Van Dijk over the last couple of years win the Champions League. I think the new breed is coming and this guy [Dias] is a massive part of it.

‘The biggest thing for a centre-back, in terms of body position, I think he’s the best by a long way in the Premier League.’

Since arriving at the Etihad, Dias has played 44 times and has one goal to his name. He has already won the Carabao Cup with Man City and will be hoping to steer Man City to the Premier League title by beating Chelsea on Saturday.

There is still hope of a magnificent treble for Pep Guardiola’s men and the dream can come true on May 29 if they win the UEFA Champions League final after beating PSG 4:1 on aggregate to qualify.
