Former Liverpool center-back Jamie Carragher has claimed that the Reds’ chances of defending their Premier League title are dependent on the acquisition of a center-back by Jurgen Klopp this month.
The January window is now open and Liverpool have the chance of signing replacements for the likes of Vigil van Dijk and Joe Gomez who are out of action due to long-term injuries.
The injured duo may not return to action until late in the ongoing season and this could play a part in Liverpool’s failure to defend their Premier League title if it’s eventually the case.
In a chat with Sky Sports after the 1 nil Premier League loss to Southampton on Monday night, Carragher said: “I can’t see Liverpool winning the league if they don’t buy a center-back”
The likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho deputized as center-backs for the game which eventually ended in defeat and put perennial rivals Manchester United in good stead to top the Premier League if they win their outstanding game.
“I said that after the Everton game [on 17 October], when Van Dijk was injured, but I think it’s a really tough ask if they don’t bring anyone in.
“The fact they played Jordan Henderson at center-back is not going to do a lot for the two lads on the bench [Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips] and their confidence if they have two midfielders playing there.
“Henderson is not a center-back. He did well, but it’s not his position.”
Fabinho can deputize decently as a center-back but this is not the case with Jordan Henderson who is not very much accustomed to playing in front of the goalkeeper as part of the defensive setup.
Regardless of the lack of depth in the central defensive positions at the club due to injuries, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp recently disclosed that the club would not sign a central defender.
