Edinson Cavani has reportedly told Manchester United officials that he wants to leave the club this summer to join Boca Juniors. It can be recalled that the prolific Uruguayan striker joined the Red Devils on a free transfer from PSG in the summer and endured a slow start to life at Old Trafford.
However, he has since adapted nicely and established himself as one of the key members of the squad under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season.
Cavani has scored 3 goals in his last 3 games for the club and they are keen to extend his deal next season. Regardless, the player has made his future intentions clear after holding talks with Man United officials according to Argentinian outlet Depo.
The forward told the club that he wants a return to South America in order to be closer to his family. The report also adds that he is ready to turn down offers from the Brazilian clubs interested in him so that he can join Boca Juniors.
This will come as a blow to the Norwegian boss, considering that he recently hailed Cavani’s positive influence at the club, adding that he was keeping an open dialogue with the 34-year-old with regards to his future.
‘I’ve kept in touch with Edi of course,’ said the United manager. ‘We keep an open dialogue and he’s still unsure what he wants to do next season, which I find fine.
‘It’s not been easy year either for him or the rest of the world, this season, so he still wants time to make his mind up.
‘I’m very sure we will get the good version of Edinson for the rest of the season. He knows this is the business end of season, where we fight for the Europa League trophy and we can see the end line in the league.
‘He’s been so positive in and around the place, he’s been great to have. He’s been working hard now to get fit and we’ve got him. Now hopefully we can keep him fit for the next six or seven weeks.’
Meanwhile, Cavani has scored 10 goals for Manchester United in all competitions this season and 8 of those goals have come from 11 starts in the Premier League.
He now has 363 goals from 617 games and this has made him one of the most deadly strikers in recent years. Regardless, they’ll still be counting on him as they aim to consolidate on second place in the Premier League this season.
