Chelsea given 7-day ultimatum to sign Kovacic

Chelse are yet to have any discussions with Croatia international Mateo Kovacic after a season-long loan spell at Stamford Bridge from Real Madrid.

Regardless, the Stamford Bridge outfit have been given 7 days to decide if they want to make any move for the player or not. In spite of the looming two-window transfer ban, the Blues have an option to sign Kovacic since he has already been registered at the club as a player.

However, they now have until July 1 to make the decision or he returns to Real Madrid where he appears to be surplus to requirements under Zinedine Zidane as they have eyes on Paul Pogba.

The Blues are reportedly set to appoint Frank Lampard as the new boss but it remains to be seen if the Englishman will be interested in keeping Mateo Kovacic at Chelsea. Meanwhile, the Croatian wants to stay with the club after an eventful debut season under Maurizio Sarri.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek who plays a similar role to Kovacic at the club is nursing an Achilles injury and will be out of action till November. This could be one of the reasons why Chelsea may opt to keep the Croatian.
