Chelsea now have the likes of Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and veteran Willy Caballero as goalkeepers who will battle for a regular place between the sticks this season.
However, reports have emerged that the Blues approached to sign Marc-Andre ter Stegen from Barcelona before settling for newcomer Edouard Mendy.
Frank Lampard prioritized signing a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window after Kepa failed to convince the Englishman with his performances between the sticks last season.
The Spain international was not very convincing and this resulted in him being dropped for a period including the FA Cup final last season.
The Blues were on the search for a new shot-stopper but it became clear that letting go of Kepa would be very difficult considering his £72m price tag which they paid two years ago to sign him from Athletic Bilbao. Meanwhile, there was very little interest in him.
It was a no-brainer that Chelsea needed a new goalie to challenge the Spaniard. Regardless, Lampard expressed support for the Spaniard although he still made some errors in the 2 nil loss to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge last month.
The Blues eventually signed Edouard Mendy from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes taking their summer spending spree close to £250million. Mendy made his debut for the club in the Premier League in the 4 nil defeat of Crystal Palace before the international break.
Former Blues goalie Petr Cech is said to have played a vital role in the acquisition of Mendy although he wasn’t their first-choice initially, as a report from Mundo Deportivo has revealed. Chelsea reached out to the representatives of Ter Stegen to secure his signature.
The Blues were trying to convince the Germany international not to renew his contract at Barcelona. The 28-year-old has two years left in his contract at Camp Nou and was also a subject of interest from Serie A sides Juventus and Inter Milan.
However, Ter Stegen remained with Barcelona and it is believed that the German will extend his contract with the club. He has been on the sidelines after surgery in August and should make a return this month.
Meanwhile, Neto has impressed in his absence this season with just 1 goal conceded in the three games thus far. Hopefully, he maintains decent performances.
