The Carabao Cup will see 4 of the big Premier League teams lock horns with each other on Wednesday night. Liverpool will face Arsenal at Anfield while Chelsea will welcome Man United to Stamford Bridge.
Manchester United and Chelsea faced each other in Frank Lampard’s first official Premier League game in charge. The Red Devils trounced their Blue counterparts 4 nil on the day. However, Chelsea have improved considerably since then whilst Man United have struggled. The Red Devils seem to be returning to winning ways recently and this game should tell if it’s a fluke or a fact.
Chelsea are favorites going into this game but they will be careful not to be complacent against a Manchester United side who are coming into the game with the confidence of a win in the previous encounter between the two sides.
Man United will be looking to build from their last 3 games and try to steal a win against Chelsea as a positive result could see them kickstart their season.
SOME STATS AHEAD OF THE GAME
- Christian Pulisic is the youngest player to score a Premier League hat-trick for Chelsea at the age of 21
- Manchester United established themselves as the first Premier League club to reach 2000 goals in a competition. This is a milestone achievement for the Red Devils and a pointer to their prestige.
POSSIBLE PLAYERS TO WATCH
The Belgium international is expected to get the nod ahead of Tammy Abraham for this one considering his recent impressive form for Chelsea. Batshuayi has played just 64 minutes in all competitions this season and has scored 2 goals. This cup tie is one encounter that should see him get more minutes and stake a claim for a starting berth in the main first eleven.
The Welshman is improving game by game and is gradually establishing himself as a mainstay in Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s team. Only a handful would have expected him to make it to the starting lineup after his arrival from Swansea but he has done so. He already has 3 goals and 2 assists to his name in the Premier League and is undoubtedly one player the Chelsea fullbacks will have to watch out for.
The likes of Willy Caballero, Michy Batshuayi, Reece James, Hudson-Odoi and Pedro are expected to start for the Blues. Billy Gilmour could also be given a run in. Ross Barkley may be available for selection although the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Antonio Rudiger remain on the sidelines.
Nemanja Matic and Luke Shaw are likely to be unfit for this game. Paul Pogba and Eric Bailly are still recovering while Daniel James, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard are expected to start. It remains to be seen if Anthony Martial will be handed a start or come on as a substitute.
The game is expected to be a cracker with both sides coming off the back of impressive victories in the Premier League last weekend. Chelsea are favorites but Manchester United have proven they’re no pushovers in the big games. I’ll yet again stand on the fence for this one.
