Chelsea vs Newcastle United preview – What to expect

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea will return to Premier League action when they welcome Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United to Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The Magpies are coming off the back of an impressive 1 nil win against Manchester United at the St James’ Park and will be hoping to cause an upset against a young Chelsea side.

Chelsea, on the other hand, have started winning Premier League games at home and thrashed Southampton 4:1 away from home at the St Mary’s stadium just before the international break.

Regardless, the Blues will be looking to maintain their winning form at Stamford Bridge and will be hoping for another clean sheet when Steve Bruce’s men come calling on Saturday. It can be recalled that Newcastle recently claimed the scalp of Tottenham Hotspur in London and Frank Lampard’s men will do themselves a lot of good not to underrate this weekend’s opponents.

Chelsea are overwhelming favorites for all 3 points in this one as the Magpies have just 2 wins in 8 games. The Blues are on a 4-game winning run and will be looking to maintain it and continue mounting pressure on the sides above them in the Premier League log.

The game is all set out for one team claiming maximum points as just 1 out of the last 15 encounters between the two sides have ended in a draw.

TEAM NEWS

Chelsea: N’Golo Kante suffered an injury during the international break and may join other injured players on the sidelines although he returned to light training this week. Meanwhile, Antonio Rudiger and Matteo Kovacic will undergo late fitness tests to determine if they’re fit enough for the game.

Newcastle United: Isaac Hayden will be serving the second of his three-game suspension while the likes of Matt Ritchie and Florian Lejeune are on the sidelines.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Newcastle have proved to be a very resilient and cagey side but they’ll have to contend with a free-flowing attacking-oriented Chelsea side, who’ll also allow them to express themselves on the pitch.

Chelsea have failed to score just once in their last 11 matches and have scored 15 goals in their last 4 games. Therefore, the Magpies will have to be at their cagey and defensive best to deny the Blues from finding the back of the net.

Newcastle have scored just 5 goals in 8 games thus far. The Blues have improved defensively in recent times, therefore, the Magpies also have another big task to accomplish if they must score on Saturday to give themselves a fighting chance. Nevertheless, this should be a great game.

We’ll be going for Chelsea win in this one with at least 3 goals in the game.
