Demba Ba retires from football

Former Chelsea striker Demba Ba has called it a day from the beautiful game, he’s Announced his Retirement after 16 years of a football career.

Demba Ba started his football Journey at French club Rouen in 2005, he was able to spend a season there with 26 appearances, scoring 22 goals before moving to Belgian club, Royal Excelsior Mouscron in 2006.

There, he was unfortunate with injury, he ruptured his tibia and fibula that kept him out of football for a complete 8 months. At Les Hurlus, he was able to feature 22 times with 8 goals out of his boot.

In August 2007, Ba moved to Bundesliga 2 side 1899 Hoffenheim, he was an integral part of the club’s promotion to German top-flight football the following season.


At Die Kraichgauer, he spent 4 seasons and recorded 97 appearances with 37 goals in German Bundesliga games. Ba was able to net 40 goals in 103 appearances for the German side before moving abroad.

In 2011, Ba had a rift with his employer and the Hoffenheim hierarchy was not in accord with his actions of forcing a move away from the club. An agreement was struck with Stoke City to get rid of Demba Ba for around 7m euros but failed the medical with the English club.

This development truncated his proposed move to the English Premier League. Regardless, he later moved to Premier League side, West Ham United on a get paid-as-you-play basis as a result of the incessant knee injuries in his record.


He managed only 12 games for the Hammers, unfortunately, he couldn’t go to relegation with West ham even with an enticing offer to keep him. Despite being their top goal scorer in the 2010–11 season, they were relegated to the Championship and Ba couldn’t go down with them, he later moved to Newcastle United.

He spent one-and-a-half seasons with the Magpies, appearing 54 times and scoring 29 goals. His time there caught Chelsea’s attention and they snapped him up. In January 2013, he completed his move to Chelsea for an undisclosed fee.

He could only record 14 goals in 54 total appearances for the Blues.
The arrival of Diego Costa doomed his chances of playing for the Blues. He joined Turkish giant Beşiktaş for a reported fee of €6 million.


After a season in Turkey, he moved to Shanghai Shenhua in the Chinese Super League where he spent 3 seasons. Although, he had a couple of loans back to Turkish clubs when he was still in Shanghai.

He returned to Turkey by signing for Goztepe before he moved back to Shanghai for a second spell in the 2018/19 season. In the summer of 2019, Ba signed forİstanbul Başakşehir, he spent two seasons and won his second Super League with them, the first was with Besiktas.

He joined Swiss Super League club FC Lugano and made just 3 appearances for them before he called it a wrap. Although Ba was born and raised in France, he represented his parents’ country Senegal from 2007 to 2015.

He featured for the country at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. He made 22 total appearances for the Teranga Lions, scoring just3 goals


The horrific injury blow he suffered at Shanghai club in July 2016 almost crippled his football career but he recuperated and played again. He went on flourishing in the Turkish Super League. He played for 3 clubs there, Besiktas, Istanbul Basaksehir, and Goztepe.

Although he was unlucky with injury and lengthy time on the sidelines, he was able to pile up significant numbers in his illustrious sixteen years of football. The total appearances he had for clubs he was able to play for were 465 with 215 goals to his name.

On the 13th of September 2021, Demba Ba announced his retirement from football.
