Ousmane Dembele will no longer play any part for France in the ongoing Euro 2020 after picking up an injury in the draw against Hungary on Saturday. It has also been confirmed that the Barcelona forward would not recover in time if his nation progresses deep into the knockout stages of the competition.
France currently lead the group after the 1 all draw against Hungary ahead of the final round of group games on Wednesday when they face Portugal whilst Germany face Hungary.
Dembele has already amassed 27 caps for France and underwent scans on Sunday at a hospital in Budapest to check the severity of the knee injury.
After discussions between the medical staff of France and Barcelona, it was agreed that the player should be allowed to leave the French camp for further treatment.
Meanwhile, Spanish station Cadena SER have reported that Dembele could be out of action for two months and this has cast doubts over his availability for the start of the 2021/22 La Liga campaign.
The forward’s career has been hampered by injuries after making the move to Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in 2017.
He has been plagued by a series of muscle problems and hamstring injuries that have made it impossible for him to enjoy a long spell in action on the pitch for the Catalan giants.
It can be recalled that Dembele played just 5 league games for Barca in the 2019/20 season but there was some improvement in the 2020/21 season as he enjoyed a relatively injury-free season and made 44 appearances in all competitions.
He started from the bench in both games for France. He came on late in the win over Germany and was subbed in the 57th minute against Hungary although he had to be subbed off 30 minutes later due to the injury.
