Big clubs eying Depay as Barca reportedly agree fee with Lyon

Lyon Captain and Netherlands international Memphis Depay appears to be one of the most sought after players this summer based on comments by club president Jean-Michel Aulas. Reports now suggest that Barcelona have agreed a fee with Lyon for the forward.

La Liga giants Barcelona reportedly see Depay as one of the best options to solve their inadequacies in attack with current boss Koeman also reportedly interested in a reunion with the Dutchman at Camp Nou.

Depay plays similarly to the likes of Messi and Griezmann as he likes to get the ball on his feet and create. Therefore, Koeman has identified the Ligue 1 star as someone he would like to acquire for Barcelona in his spell as manager.

Regardless, Aulas has claimed that AS Roma have also joined the race for Depay. Roma last won the Serie A in 2001 and signing one of Ligue 1’s biggest stars will put them in a good position to mount a challenge, although signing just him won’t be enough in my opinion.

Roma are also looking to return to the UEFA Champions League after missing out for the second season running.

It remains to be seen if they’ll be able to afford him although Lyon are also without Champions League football next season after finishing 7th last season due to the abrupt termination of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic which they planned to contest.

It can be recalled that Depay made a move to Lyon after a horrible spell at Manchester United under Louis van Gaal. He declined after the move to Old Trafford but has revived his career at both club and international level after moving to Lyon.

His impact on the side has been top-notch and it came as no surprise when he was handed the captain’s armband. Meanwhile, reports suggest that the Dutchman is available for as little as £22m.
