Ferdinand – Pepe can improve under Mikel Arteta
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand feels that new Arsenal boss can help Nicolas Pepe to rediscover his form at the Emirates.
Pepe is yet to hit form for the Gunners after making a £72 million club-record move from Ligue 1 side Lille to the Emirates last summer.
Regardless, the winger played his part nicely to ensure Mikel Arteta’s first victory as Arsenal boss as he opened the scoring against Manchester United in the Premier League at the Emirates on New Year’s Day. The game eventually ended 2 nil in favor of Arsenal.
Rio Ferdinand believes that the Ivorian can develop under Arteta, considering how the Spaniard played his part in the improvement of Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane at Manchester City.
“Massive signing, hasn’t produced, today he looked like a new player,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“That comes from confidence from a manager, showing belief. He’s young, it’s youth, and I think he’s got time to work.
“It’s been well documented how much influence Arteta had on the likes of Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling [at Manchester City], young wingers, Pepe falls into that category, can he improve?”
Pepe has played 15 games for Arsenal in all competitions this season and has scored 5 goals. He will surely be looking forward to finding the back of the net when Arsenal face Leeds United in the FA Cup on January 6.
