Is Jadon Sancho the best English export in recent decades?

The subject of English players going out of the Premier League to compete in other European leagues and thrive in recent times has been a major one.

It has been a while we saw an Englishman go outside England to one of the elite European teams and blaze the trail there. It has been quite long!

Well, one young footballer has been doing just that in recent times with regards to the topic at hand and he is Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.

Jadon Sancho, 20, is currently one of the best players in the Bundesliga and easily the best youngster across Europe’s top five leagues. He is also one of the hottest and highly coveted properties in Europe.

His performances since his arrival at the Signal Iduna Park have made it difficult for folks to see him playing for Dortmund in the 2020/21 football season. The England international emerged from the Watford FC youth academy before moving to Manchester City as a youth player.

However, he never made it to the City senior side under Guardiola as there were disagreements over the assurance of playing time ahead of the 2017/18 season.

He was subsequently omitted from the pre-season squad and this resulted in his move to Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth £8 million.

It’s still a surprise how Guardiola couldn’t identify this gem under his nose and keep him at the Etihad. Borussia Dortmund identified the youngster’s genius, signed him, and immediately included him in the senior side after three games with Borussia Dortmund II in Regionallaga West.

Since then, Sancho has been out there establishing himself as one of the few young English players to thrive outside England in a league where the pattern of football is very different from what is attainable in the Premier League.

The England international has carved a niche for himself in the Bundesliga as one of the most creative and exciting players in the league and also in Europe.

His creative ability from the wings and through the middle as an attacking midfielder is top-notch and this has been proven with the numbers he has garnered thus far.

His call-up to the Three Lions by Gareth Southgate in 2018 didn’t come as a major surprise because he was needed. He has played 11 games for England and has scored two goals since then.

Jadon Sancho’s development curve at Dortmund has been upward all thanks to his improved form every season since he joined the club. The Englishman has been phenomenal this season in the Bundesliga and his numbers thus far speak volumes.

He has played 25 Bundesliga games for Dortmund this season and has 14 goals and 16 assists to his name. In the UEFA Champions League, he played 8 games and had 2 goals and 2 assists to his name. It’s a pity they were eliminated from the round of 16 of the competition.

Man City would undoubtedly be regretting letting this gem of a player slip away from their grips.

He has been linked with a return to England in the summer with the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea being reported as possible destinations. We wait to see how these transfer speculations pan out in the summer.
