Koeman open to exodus of Barca first-team players

Reports suggest that Ronald Koeman is open to the sale of Barcelona’s second and third captains namely, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba as he looks forward to a major overhaul of the team at the Nou Camp this summer.

The Dutchman has agreed to replace Quique Setien at Nou Camp after the Catalan’s disgraceful elimination from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich with an 8:2 defeat. According to El Periodico, Koeman could be planning a clearout that would see 6 major first-team players leave Barcelona for good.

It can be recalled that Barcelona also faltered domestically as Real Madrid won the La Liga for the 2019/20 season and the Dutchman won’t give any room for half measures in his bid to restore Barcelona to glory.

He’ll be looking to correct flaws in the dressing room with the likes of Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Samuel Umtiti, Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic, and Arturo Vidal likely to be axed from the team.

Koeman believes that slashing the club’s wage bill by doing away with the aged stars will help inject new energy into the team and get the best out of the likes of Frenkie De Jong and Antoine Griezmann.

A report by Cadena Ser suggests that Koeman will be assisted by the club’s sporting director Eric Abidal to clean up the first-team squad. It is expected that some of the club’s biggest earners will leave this summer.

Rakitic has been heavily linked with an exit from the club and has been free to do so for the past three years. Reports suggest that Sevilla are interested while Luis Suarez could make a sensational return to Eredivisie giants Ajax.

This subject of a major overhaul is coming off the back of a report by fellow Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo that just five members of the first-team have been deemed untransferable by the club this summer.
