Chelsea FC under Frank Lampard have been one of the surprise packages in the Premier League this season. The Blues went into the 2019/20 football season with a manager who was inexperienced at the highest level and still in the early days of his managerial career. This was alongside a transfer ban that prevented the club from making any major signings during the summer.
Regardless, the Blues went into the season and Lampard chose to rely on youth players like Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, and Fikao Tomori, players who also had no major experience at the highest stage. Meanwhile, with regard to new signings, the Blues only succeeded in making the deal for Matteo Kovacic permanent.
All was set and Frank Lampard was welcomed to the Premier League with a 4 nil bashing by Manchester United at Old Trafford in his very first league game in charge. Despite the loss, glimpses of a decent side were shown. However, only doom and gloom was predicted from then, considering the competitive nature of the league.
However, fast-forward to the present and the reverse is the case. Chelsea are currently on a run and have 7 consecutive wins in all competitions. The youngsters who Frank Lampard also chose to trust have been covering themselves in glory, having contributed a major percentage of the goals scored by Chelsea thus far.
Frank Lampard has also shown his tactical flexibility as his Chelsea side appear to be improving game after game, showing an ability to adapt different systems based on the opponent in question. The reverts from 4 at the back to 3 at the back for some games is a proof of this.
Meanwhile, The UEFA Champions League welcomed the Blues with a 1 nil loss at home to Valencia in their very first game in the competition. However, they rallied back and won 2 consecutive games away from home to Lille and group favorites Ajax to keep themselves in good stead for qualification to the knockout stages of the competition.
Chelsea are also scoring for fun, although they leaked goals successively at the start of the campaign. They are beginning to attain some defensive solidity and this has been shown in the clean sheets they’ve garnered in recent games.
Frank Lampard also appears to be spoilt for choice as all players are motivated to impress and stake a claim for a starting berth. The likes of Michy Batshuayi and hat-trick hero Christian Pulisic have proven thus.
Chelsea are very attractive under Frank Lampard and are also an attack-minded side, with the emphasis on building from the back still in place. Frank Lampard’s tactics have made his side very effective and direct on the field of play and this is a very welcome development for Chelsea fans.
It’s still early days but the Blues are only showing signs of getting better and hopefully, this is the case. They are now favorites for a top 4 finish but this was a far-fetched dream after the first few games of the season.
Frank Lampard is establishing himself as the ideal man for the job and the results thus far prove this beyond doubts. The guts he showed by relying on youth in some key positions and choosing to stick with them ahead of the far more established players when the dust had not settled should not be overlooked.
Hopefully, his side can get better and maintain their consistency as the rookie English manager in the Premier League continues to punch above his weight in a season where all odds were against him even before he was appointed.
