Sporting CP left-back Nuno Mendes is reportedly attracting the attention of two Premier League giants, Manchester United and Liverpool.
The 18-year-old has been in scintillating form for the Portuguese outfit this season and they are unbeaten in the league and currently 9 points clear at the top of the Primeira Liga.
Mendes has started 18 games for Sporting CP this season and is under contract. However, they might be forced to cash in on him if an offer comes as they intend to raise funds amid the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United and Liverpool are keeping tabs on Mendes as both clubs are on the lookout for left-backs to provide competition for the likes of Luke Shaw and Andy Robertson respectively.
Mendes’ versatility can also see him play as a wing-back and this is another of his desirable traits. However, the two English clubs will face competition for the youngster’s signature as Juventus and AC Milan are tracking the youngster according to A Bola.
The player has a release clause worth £63m on his contract and it is believed that Sporting could accept a lower fee for the Portuguese Under-21 star. However, reports suggest that the club are not willing to listen to any offers below his buyout clause presently.
Chances of signing the player by any club will possibly be boosted if the club acquire him and send him back on loan to Sporting CP for a year or two.
Man United are interested in making some big-name signings in the summer while Liverpool will be active in the summer for defensive reinforcements.
The two Premier League clubs can afford to meet the player’s market value and will likely go head to head for his signature if the likes of Juventus and AC Milan can’t afford it. This is no guarantee though and we’ll have to wait till the summer to see how this development pans out.
