The 2020/21 Premier League season kicks off this weekend and all eyes will be on defending champions Liverpool, as they’ll be hell-bent on mounting a successful title defense.
The Reds were exceptional last season and were unbeaten for most parts until the league title was almost as good as won.
Jurgen Klopp and his men had very little worries in various areas of the pitch last season as players put in the required efforts including those on the bench when occasionally called upon.
They took the best of the best last season to the cleaners and the points gap between first and second on the 2019/20 log is a proof and tells the full story of how brilliant they were in a season where they were heads and shoulders above their rivals.
I agree that they were the best team in England last season but they’re yet to make any major reinforcements this summer and this calls for some concern.
I say so because they played like a team that was found out towards the tail end of last season and this could continue into the new season if no major acquisitions are made this summer.
It can be recalled that the Reds were beaten on penalties by Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the 2020/21 FA Community Shield game that ended 1 all after the blast of the final whistle.
This can easily be chalked off as a mere inconsequential and glorified pre-season friendly but the signs have been there since the tail end of last season, not taking anything away from Arsenal.
Liverpool need to make major acquisitions this summer if they want to successfully defend the Premier League title which eluded them for decades.
This should be the case as their rivals are strengthening considerably and looking to take the fight to them in the upcoming season, although football betting odds will tag as them as favorites in the majority of the Premier League games they’ll play this season.
Manchester City. alongside potential title contenders like Chelsea, Manchester United, amongst others are boosting their squads with quality players to increase their chances of putting up a good fight for the 2020/21 Premier League.
Chelsea have spent more than 200 million pounds on some decent players and this is a major sign that they have their eyes on the title this season. However, the Reds are yet to make any notable signing.
Funny enough, reports of some key departures have even emerged, Georgino Wijnaldum is reportedly close to a move to Barcelona and he was one of the key men at Anfield last season.
The Reds have been linked with Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara but there has been no success in the pursuit thus far. Jurgen Klopp has to add some quality to his ranks to avoid being fully found out as seemed the case towards the end of last season.
Rivals have strengthened and the defending champions must not downplay the importance of doing the same if they are to stand a chance next season. The summer transfer window closes soon and hopefully, Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool hierarchy will splash the cash.
Let’s see how their opening 2020/21 Premier League game against newly-promoted Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United pans out.
The result at the end of the day should provide a clue as to where the Reds may be found wanting this term. Regardless, they should do themselves some good by splashing the cash this summer before the window shuts.
