Man City eye January move for Skriniar or Matviyenko

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is reportedly considering moves for a new defender in the January transfer window with the likes of Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Mykola Matviyenko being sounded out.

The Citizens have been depleted in central defense this season following Aymeric Laporte’s knee injury as well as the likes of John Stones and Nicholas Otamendi who have been forced to the sidelines at some periods.

This has forced Pep Guardiola to make do with a makeshift center-back pairing, with midfielders like Fernandinho and Rodri being made to deputize as center-backs. This appears to have affected the Citizens’ title chances as Liverpool sit comfortably at the top of the Premier League table.

Man City have already conceded 24 goals this season compared to last season where they conceded just 23 in the whole season. According to the Athletic, Pep Guardiola is taking a look at defenders that can fit his criteria at City and will look to sign them up this month.

Slovakia international Milan Skriniar is highly rated at Inter Milan and has established himself as an indispensable member of the side since making the move from Sampdoria in 2017 and has played 96 times for Inter. However, he recently signed a deal with the San Siro outfit and could prove difficult to prise away. It’s likely that Man City will have to smash their transfer record to get him.

Meanwhile, Matviyenko can be a cheaper alternative with his contract set to expire in 2021. City have had their sights on the 23-year-old since he played against them in the UEFA Champions League this season. He has been at Shakhtar Donetsk his entire career after finally breaking through to the senior side. He has played 27 games in all competitions this season.

It can be recalled that no recognized center-back featured for Man City in their last 2:1 Premier League against Everton with Guardiola opting for a three-man backline of Fernandinho, Rodri, and 18-year-old Eric Garcia.
