Manchester City stars Aymeric Laporte and Riyad Mahrez have tested positive for coronavirus. This was disclosed by the Premier League club on Monday. The two players will now have to spend a period in self-isolation in conformance with government guidelines.
A statement released by the club read: “Manchester City FC can confirm that Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte have tested positive for Covid-19.
“Both players are currently observing a period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine. Neither is displaying symptoms of the virus.
“Everyone at the Club wishes Riyad and Aymeric a speedy recovery ahead of their return to training and the new season.”
The isolation period is already in effect with the 2020/21 Premier League approaching although the Citizens won’t participate until Monday. September 21, when they travel to face Wolves. This promises to be a tight one for Pep Guardiola and his men.
Their home clash against Aston Villa was scheduled for this weekend but was postponed to allow them to enjoy some extra time off after their exertions in the UEFA Champions League having just stopped playing competitive football last month.
The affected duo will be key men for the Citizens in the upcoming season. Riyad Mahrez played 50 times for Manchester City last season in all competitions, scoring 13 goals and contributing 16 assists.
Meanwhile, Laporte was limited to just 20 appearances last season after missing five months of action due to a serious knee injury.
The Frenchman is yet to get off flying on a consistent basis since joining Manchester City from Athletic Bilbao and this has been mostly due to injury problems.
Hopefully, he gets a reprieve from injuries this season as City mount a challenge to wrestle the Premier League title away from Liverpool who won it in a fantastic manner last term.
