Maurizio Sarri rejects Olympique Marseille job

Maurizio Sarri is in the news this morning although he’s still without a job after being sacked by Juventus. The Italian’s story could pass for a proper definition of the saying that ‘all that glitters is not gold’.

It can be recalled that Sarri abandoned his job at Chelsea during supposed hard times for a move to his homeland to manage Juventus. However, his managerial adventure in Turin lasted for just 1 season.

Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Marseille reached out to Maurizio Sarri after Andre Villas-Boas shockingly resigned as their coach but the Italian maintains he is not interested in taking over a team in the middle of the season.

This was revealed by seasoned transfer market experts Gianluca Di Marzio and Alfredo Pedullà.

Villas-Boas reportedly resigned due to disagreements related to the club’s transfer market strategies and pointed out the acquisition of Olivier Ntcham on deadline day as one of the examples.

Meanwhile, Sarri is still contracted to Juventus and this includes a €6M salary and a €2.5M clause in case it was not extended for the 2021/22 season.

The Italian won the Scudetto with Juventus but was sacked after their poor performance and elimination from the UEFA Champions League by Lyon in the Round of 16, amid reports of a rocky relationship with the locker room.

According to Pedullà, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis recently contacted Sarri and offered him a return to Napoli during a crisis with Gennaro Gattuso but the Italian refused to change his stance of wanting to only pick a team in the summer.

However, it is believed that he will only reconsider the stance if Roma come calling as he is fascinated by the squad. Meanwhile, free agent Rafael Benitez has emerged as a strong option for the Marseille job.
