Ligue 1 outfit Nantes have been hit with a fine of 21,000 euros after supporters of the club set off flares in the course of games in a bid to pay tribute to former striker Emiliano Sala who lost his life in a plane crash last month.
It can be recalled that a single-engine plane with Emiliano Sala on board in a trip from Nantes to Cardiff to complete a transfer move crashed on January 21 in the English Channel.
The wreckage of the plane was discovered on February 3 after a search which was privately funded was undertaken, with the player’s body recovered after three days. However, the pilot David Ibbotson remains missing.
Nantes were fined 16,500 euros by the disciplinary commission of the French Ligue 1. This was after some supporters of the club set off flares and threw objects in the course of a league game against St Etienne on January 30 after the player was declared missing.
The club was also hit with another fine of 4,500 euros after some supporters of the club paid a similar tribute in the course of the game against Nimes earlier in January.
