Neymar – I didn’t celebrate to mess with Kimmich

PSG forward Neymar has denied that he deliberately celebrated in front of Joshua Kimmich after his side booked a place in the semifinals of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League despite the 1 nil defeat to Bayern Munich at the Parc Des Princes.

The tie ended 3:3 on aggregate with the Ligue 1 giants progressing on away goals rule. The Brazilian was instrumental to the side’s 3:2 victory at the Allianz Arena and also took center stage when the Bavarian giants came visiting.

PSG will meet either Manchester City or Borussia Dortmund in the next stage of the competition. Neymar was excited with his side’s progress but has been criticized for celebrating with Leandro Paredes directly in front of an unimpressed Kimmich.

‘It’s funny because I didn’t even celebrate to mess with him, it was more with Leo and I ended up celebrating with him. It was fate that put me close to [Kimmich],’ Neymar told TNT Sports Brasil after the match.

‘He said that their team was better, that they would win. He was sure that they would go to the semifinals.’

Speaking on the significance of the victory for the French outfit, he added:

‘The message we had to send was given last season, when we reached the final, played a great game against Bayern, which was the best team last year.

‘This year I didn’t see it that way. During the draw, I told my teammates that we were going to face Bayern, and it happened.

‘I told them to be calm, that we were prepared. We needed to show this to ourselves, that we can do it. It was a great game, even though we were beaten, we played better.’

Meanwhile, the Brazilian continues to be linked with an exit from PSG and a possible return to Barcelona and this has been the case in recent seasons.

Although he is yet to commit to PSG with a new contract, he gave a strong hint that his future is at the Parc Des Princes.

He said: ‘I don’t think this is even a topic anymore, I obviously feel very comfortable, at home at PSG,” Neymar said. “I feel happier than before.’
