A good number of Arsenal fans are convinced that Mikel Arteta could make attempts to seal the return of Martin Odegaard to the Emirates this summer.
However, this dream may not come to fruition as Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly made it clear that he wants the Norwegian to remain at the club for the upcoming season.
Martin Odegaard spent the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan to Arsenal and he was impressive despite the short spell.
He has since returned to Spain but it is understood that the Premier League club are looking to get him back on another loan deal or a permanent transfer.
Meanwhile, Ancelotti has previously stated that every player is important as the season approaches and he will make his decisions after he has observed the squad on the pitch.
The Norway captain has seemingly impressed during the preseason games thus far with significant game time and Football Espana claim that Ancelotti is convinced that Odegaard must stay.
It appears that Madrid are ready to renew his contract and this contradicts earlier reports that they were open to selling him this summer. Ancelotti has reportedly met the player to discuss his role in his plans for the upcoming season and this would be a big blow to Arsenal.
The Italian boss has reportedly guaranteed Odegaard the opportunities he has found hard to come by in previous years since making the move to the Spanish capital. He has given him assurances although he’d still have to contend with the competition of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.
It can be recalled that a shocking lack of depth in midfield hampered Real Madrid’s chances of winning the La Liga in the final days of the campaign as Kroos and Modric appeared over-worked and exhausted.
Injuries also forced former manager Zinedine Zidane to rely on youngsters from Real Madrid Castilla to get to the end of the season. Therefore, having Odegaard available in a rotational system will be a big plus for Ancelotti, thus handing the Norwegian the chance to establish himself in the lineup.
This recent development is a big blow to Mikel Arteta and Arsenal. It’s good news that they’ve been recently linked with a move for Leicester City’s James Maddison. However, they’d have to part with an arm and a leg to get the Englishman this summer.
