Real Sociedad send wishes to ex-player Kovacevic after shooting
Real Sociedad have wished their former player Darko Kovacevic a swift recovery after reports emerged that he was shot at, outside his home in Athens on Tuesday.
The former Serbia international and who also played as a forward for Juventus was taken to a hospital for knee and wrist injuries after dodging a bullet whilst being assaulted by two men when he was getting out of his car in Glyfada, a southern suburb in Athens.
Kovacevic spent nine seasons in two spells at Real Sociedad and they tweeted some goodwill messages to him after the incident: “We are hearing worrying news from Athens. Darko, we wish you a swift recovery.”
Kovacevic, 46, spoke with reporters after his discharge from the hospital: “I saw a man getting out of a car with a gun in his hand and coming towards me.
“I instinctively dived to the right and he fired at me. Then he ran, got into the car and disappeared.”
Kovacevic played his part nicely for Sociedad as they finished second in the La Liga in the 2002/03 season, scoring 20 goals in the process. He also played for Red Star Belgrade, Juventus, Lazio, and Olympiakos before he was forced into retirement in May 2009 by a blocked artery.
He also won league titles in Greece, Serbia as well as the Intertoto Cup with the Old Ladies in 1999, where he found the back of the net 26 times over two seasons.
