Arsenal players no longer believe in Unai Emery after the shocking draw against Southampton at the Emirates left them 8 points off the top 4. The result saw the Gunners go six games without a win and are currently 8th in the Premier League.
According to The Telegraph, the players are bemused by the Spaniard’s selections, tactics, and instructions as sentiments that he should be sacked for Arsenal to get back on track continues to grow.
“There is no identity to the team and the players do not see any progress.
“The recent performances and results have had a big impact on the belief of the squad.
“Does anybody still think they can qualify for the Champions League under the coach? I don’t think so.”
The situation has been compounded by Tottenham Hotspur’s appointment of Jose Mourinho: “Mourinho taking over at Tottenham has only made it worse,” a source said.
“Unai Emery is not seen as a coach on the same level as Guardiola, Klopp or even Mourinho.”
Arsenal legend Robert Pires also admitted that the club is in big trouble although he backed Unai Emery to turn things around at the Emirates.
“Everybody knows at Arsenal, even Unai Emery, that they are in big trouble,’ Pires told Omnisport. “But [Emery] is a competitor, he knows the high level. He was a great manager with Sevilla, with Paris Saint-Germain, but the situation is not so good.
‘He is a good manager, I think he will make a success with Arsenal. I hope for him anyway.”
If Unai Emery is sacked by the club, assistant first-team coach Freddie Ljungberg could become interim boss until the summer. Other possible candidates being sounded out are Mikel Arteta, Julian Nagelsmann, and Brendan Rodgers.
