Solskjaer admits that Martial will improve United’s creativity

Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed Anthony Martial to provide creativity for his side as they’ll benefit from his return having adopted a three-at-the-back formation.

The Red Devils were impressive in the 1 all draw against Liverpool in the Premier League at Old Trafford last Sunday.

They finally got their first away win since August and it was in the Europa League against Serbian side Partizan by a lone goal. The Red Devils had some bit of luck to snatch all three points from the game. The goal came through a penalty that was converted by Anthony Martial.

The victory came after 11 consecutive away games without a win. It was a very welcome development for Solskjaer and the Red Devils. Speaking after the game at the Partizan Stadium, he bemoaned the lack of pressing from his side and also pointed out the lack of creativity from the midfield.

“We’ve not created as many as we like, we’ve not scored as many as we’d like,” Solskjaer said.

“But now Anthony’s back, got a goal today and I’m sure you’ll see us improve as a team with Anthony in the team because he does give us something different.”

The Red Devils are missing Paul Pogba’s presence in the middle of the park and the Frenchman will also be absent when the Red Devils travel to face Norwich City at Carrow Road on Sunday in the Premier League.

“When I watched the first game against Liverpool, I saw a team with lots of courage,” Solskjaer said of Norwich’s Premier League opener.

“They were brave, they played their own way and they kept going.

“And that has given them some great results, when they beat Newcastle, when they beat Manchester City.

“They are a team with a clear philosophy on how they want to play.

“So, I hope we’re going to stop them, because it’s always going to be difficult down at Carrow Road, but we’re ready for it now.

“We’ve been to Belgrade, got some players back.

“I managed to take Aaron (Wan-Bissaka) and Anthony off after 60 minutes because they’ve been out for a long time.

“So, hopefully we’ll have a fresh team because we need to be at our best to have a chance.”

Man United may line up with a back three who’ll be flanked by attacking fullbacks as was the case in their last two games with decent results to show.

“Well, I think the injuries made us get into a position where the performances didn’t come,” the Norwegian said of the move to this system.

“We had fit centre-backs, good centre-backs, quality centre-backs and it just made it easier to go to a back three against Liverpool and again today.

“We’ve got Jesse (Lingard) who can play in that midfield three, we’ve got players… so today, for example, Sergio (Romero) played a World Cup final, Marcos (Rojo) played a World Cup final in a back three.

“Jonah (Phil Jones) and Harry (Maguire) were involved in a back three in a semi-final. You’ve got Jesse played in his position.

“Injuries have made us go into this position but it’s working quite well.”

Meanwhile, Man United are working hard to improve the current injury situation and the return of Martial is a big boost for the Red Devils because he can work well in the front two alongside Marcus Rashford in the newly adopted system.

“That could happen, definitely,” Solskjaer said.

“I thought Marcus and Dan James caused Liverpool problems, so it depends on who’s fit.

“Mason (Greenwood) could have played today as well.

“We’re looking more dangerous up front with two at the moment.”
