Thiago Silva’s agent Paulo Tonietto has revealed that his former club Paris Saint-Germain made a last-ditch attempt to keep him and prevent a move to Chelsea. The Ligue 1 giants made an offer to the Brazilian but he rejected it in favor of a move to London.
The 35-year-old mercurial center-back completed the move to Chelsea last week after spending 8 seasons at the Parc des Princes. In his time at PSG, Thiago Silva won 6 Ligue 1 titles and ended his stay after the UCL final defeat to Bayern Munich a few weeks ago.
The Brazilian signed a one-year deal with Chelsea with the option for a second season. However, his representative has revealed that PSG’s sporting director Leonardo made a late plea to keep him in France.
According to Tonietto, PSG manager Thomas Tuchel was keen for Thiago Silva to be part of his squad.
‘He [Thiago Silva] was no longer hoping [for a new contract] because Leonardo told him two months ago that he did not want to extend,’ Tonietto told L’Equipe.
‘But last Tuesday, Leonardo called Thiago and spoke about the possibility of staying for another year. ‘Thiago had already found an agreement with Chelsea, he couldn’t go back on it. When you get such an offer, you have to be convinced by it.
‘A sporting director tells a player that he no longer wants him, but then two months later he wants to extend his contract, how should you take that? ‘Tuchel always wanted to keep Thiago. Leonardo was the one who didn’t want him.
‘That is why, even if he hadn’t signed with Chelsea, Thiago couldn’t see how he could have accepted the offer from Leonardo.’
Thiago Silva, despite his age, is PSG’s loss and Chelsea’s gain considering his defensive prowess, the wealth of experience, and leadership traits. Chelsea lacked most of these last season and the Brazilan will help out in no small way.
