After joining Barcelona to link up with his Argentine friend Lionel Messi, who ultimately left the club to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, Sergio Agüero has quickly become disillusioned about his future with the Spanish giants. Just to compound the issue, the veteran striker has also suffered an injury setback ahead of the new LaLiga season.
Agüero feels deceived by Barcelona
When he moved to Barcelona earlier in the summer, leaving Manchester City following ten glittering years in the English Premier League, 33-year-old Agüero finally thought he had the opportunity to achieve one of his greatest professional ambitions.
He would now be able to play alongside Messi in a club side, having already enjoyed similar experiences in the past with the Argentina national team.
Indeed, this opportunity was fundamental towards Agüero choosing to join Barcelona, with club president Joan Laporta apparently guaranteeing that possibility, amidst assurances that Messi would sign a new contract.
When that didn’t happen, then Messi bade an emotional farewell before departing to sign for Paris Saint-Germain, it left Agüero with a huge feeling of disappointment and deception.

Those feelings weren’t aimed at his close family friend, given that Messi had little choice in the manner of his exit without a contract renewal at Barcelona, who are mired in financial difficulties and couldn’t register their star player ahead of the 2021-22 season.
Stringent spending limits imposed by LaLiga ensured that wouldn’t happen, which apply to all 20 clubs in the competition.
Now, media reports in Spain claim that Agüero is enraged, even going so far as to get his lawyers on the case, looking for any legal loopholes that might allow him to break his contract with Barcelona.
This could prove difficult, due to the player having signed a two-year contract with a minimum release clause valued at €100 million. In the end, it could all depend on the wording of his contract, especially if there are any references to playing alongside Messi.
Agüero injury adds further doubts
Despite the departure of Messi and his astronomical earnings, doubts remain at Barcelona surrounding which players they can register ahead of the new season. Agüero is one such player, alongside Netherlands international Memphis Depay and Spain defender Eric Garcia.
While the club remains above the salary cap limits, Barcelona cannot register any of their new signings. That issue could form the basis which lawyers working for Agüero could exploit, in tandem with Messi having exited, as they attempt to nullify the contract he signed with Barcelona.
If they can prove that Agüero was genuinely misled by Barcelona president Laporta, they could have grounds to void the two-year contract with immediate effect. However, the legal process could be slow and take time to resolve.

In the meantime, the player has found himself enduring another setback. Within hours of receiving the hammer blow news that his friend Messi would be leaving, Agüero suffered an injury setback.
An official statement from Barcelona announced that following medical examinations, Agüero had suffered a complicated tendon injury to his right calf. This will keep the striker out of action for at least 10 weeks.
Agüero was plagued by injuries during his final season with Manchester City, which limited him to just 21 appearances in all competitions, mostly from the substitutes bench with limited minutes on the pitch.
Following this latest physical issue and of course, what appear to have been broken promises that lured him to Barcelona, what initially appeared to be an exciting new adventure has now become a complete disaster for Agüero.
Tale of contrasting club fortunes
The current circumstances at Manchester City and Barcelona couldn’t be more contrasting, with one club continuing to invest heavily in high-profile signings, while the other is desperately trying to reduce their bloated wage bill.
Indeed, Agüero perhaps would have been better served by researching his new club in more detail, before deciding to move there.
Fortunately, we as punters have that opportunity before wagering on the success of any teams, ahead of the new season.

If only Agüero had thought of that before he chose Barcelona, rather than consider alternative options elsewhere.
For such a talented and successful player, the situation surrounding Agüero at Barcelona is heart-breaking to observe. After his magnificent decade of top-quality displays at Manchester City, heading into the twilight years of his illustrious football career, the Argentine ace deserves much better.
