It’s no more news that Raphael Varane decided against extending his contract with Real Madrid and is very close to moving to the Premier League to join Manchester United. Reports suggest that the two clubs are locked in negotiations about his imminent move.
It was believed that the French defender had agreed personal terms with the Red Devils but the deal cannot be completed until both clubs agree on the transfer fee as well as other terms of the move.
Real Madrid rejected Manchester United’s previous offers for the towering center-back but reports from Goal suggest that they are now closer to a compromise with Varane likely to be a Manchester United player this summer.
The sum being reported is between €45m (£39/$53m) and €55m (£47m/$65m). The Red Devils want to mount a significant title challenge under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the 2021/22 season and are making major reinforcements ahead of the season.
They’ve already completed the signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and Varane is the next name on the list of targets.
I guess very few saw Varane’s departure from Real Madrid coming this summer, and more so after Sergio Ramos left for Paris Saint-Germain. However, after he refused to sign a new contract, the La Liga giants have no choice but to seal a deal for his departure or lose him on a free transfer.
Regardless, the arrival of David Alaba from Bayern Munich should make the work easier for them. It was believed that Varane was targetted by PSG but they opted to swoop in for Ramos after it was disclosed that he was a free agent.
The Red Devils have now entered the picture for the Frenchman and are close to getting their target. According to reports, Varane was offered a five-year deal.
Meanwhile, the Frenchman has returned to Real Madrid for pre-season engagements but was absent from the friendly match against Rangers FC in Glasgow.
It appears that Florentino Perez’s treatment of Real Madrid’s major stars in recent years contributed to Varane’s decision to leave the Bernabeu in my opinion.
