Europe football’s governing body UEFA have confirmed that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be deployed in agreement with FIFA for the remaining European Qualifier matches for the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
This is coming after a decision was made by UEFA’s Executive Committee in July 2021.
The system will be in place from match day 4 and will be deployed in all the remaining matches that will be taking place from September.
It can be recalled that this would have been done earlier but was postponed due to the logistical complications and risks that could arise from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The implementation of VAR under the organization of UEFA will be done on-site at the respective stadiums of the host association with the use of designated vans that will be supplied by the providers of the UEFA VAR systems.
We look forward to this development in the coming month and hope that it will offer more solutions than controversies that have not been in short supply since the VAR system was deployed in competitive football across European Leagues.
