Voiding the Premier League – It’s Liverpool against the rest

The winner of the 2019/20 Premier League title was as good as decided several weeks back with the team in the lead just needing a few wins to seal the title.

It was arguably over because it would have taken a crazy capitulation by leaders Liverpool and a mad run of form for second-placed Manchester City to topple them on the log.

However, fast-forward to the present and Liverpool’s long-awaited domestic triumph after almost three decades now hangs in the balance due to the coronavirus pandemic, with calls from various quarters being made for the season to be canceled.

Funny enough, this is transpiring in a season where the Reds have been nothing short of legendary and exceptional. They currently sit at the top of the league table with a whopping 82 points from 29 games. It’s precisely 27 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. They lead the second-placed side on the table with 25 points, having played one game more.

It would be nothing short of heartbreak for Kopites around the world if the season is terminated, although this would be the perfect opportunity for rival fans and trolls to dig their heels deep into the hearts of the Reds’ fanbase in a season where they’ve been starved of excitement by Liverpool’s brilliance.

This is not the best time to be a Liverpool fan, as you’d have no choice but to anticipate the worst. The Eredivisie and the French Ligue 1 have been canceled and this news will have sent chills down the spines of Liverpool fans.

However, unsurprisingly, rival fans want the season to be canceled, as long as it sees Liverpool not emerge Premier League winners. No surprises there!

Regardless, reports are rife that clubs are committed to ending the season, and since its suspension on March 13, suggestions are being considered on how best the season can be restarted and ended with all teams getting what they truly deserve based on their performances on the pitch.

I daresay it’s the Reds against their top rivals in the Premier League. Liverpool fans want the season to restart, and if not, they should be handed the title. However, the latter is not possible until the season is ended. Rival fans, on the other hand, want the season terminated by means.

Liverpool could yet get their wish as project restart is already underway with some clubs welcoming their players to training amid strict measures being put in place. Regardless, there are two sides of the divide, and sadly, they both have valid opinions.

There are fears that even if the league is restarted behind closed doors, fans could still gather outside the stadium, thus making it possible for the virus to spread rapidly with social distancing rules being violated.

A null and void of the league will surely enrage the Liverpool hierarchy, Jurgen Klopp, and his players while fans and trolls will have a field day.

One thing is certain. if more of the major leagues continue to cancel their seasons, the Premier League may not be an exception. Finally, it’s Liverpool against the rest of the Premier League, and more so, their fellow title contenders.
