We have an eventful La Liga title race in our hands

The Spanish La Liga has been eventful thus far in the ongoing 2019/20 season and has produced a competitive title race where the contenders are at the necks of each other for the trophy. This hasn’t been the case for a while now and is a welcome development.

Although the title race is unsurprisingly between the two top dogs in Spanish club football, namely Real Madrid and Barcelona, the race is getting fiercer, even after the game’s return from lockdown.

The two sides are showing stuff of champions and are grinding out the needed results even when their performances have not been top-notch.

Quique Setien’s Barcelona currently lead La Liga with 3 points after grinding out a 1 nil result against Athletic Bilbao at the Nou Camp on Tuesday. However, Real Madrid have a game in hand against Mallorca at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

Los Blancos attained top spot last weekend after Barcelona’s goalless draw away to Sevilla while they beat Sociedad 2:1 away from home. Therefore, they led the log on head-to-head rules before Tuesday.

Zinedine Zidane’s men are expected to beat Mallorca at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night and retake the number spot on the log unless there is a shocker on the cards. The game is an easy one on paper but it can be recalled that Mallorca ran away 1 nil winners when both sides met earlier this season.

Now let’s take a look at how both sides have performed as the race for the title rages on. Barcelona have been surprisingly very solid at the back if you look at their recent games.

The Blaugrana haven’t conceded in their last 5 games, even after playing against the likes of Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao, and Sevilla.

That’s a welcome development for a side that had already conceded 31 goals. However, they’ve scored 70 goals in comparison to Real Madrid’s 57.

Their defensive solidity should count for something, although they’ve not been scoring much. They have 7 more games to play and these ties are tricky at best. See Barcelona’s remaining fixtures below.

Real Madrid have also been impressive, and this position is courtesy of their 2-nil Classico victory against Barcelona that established their head-to-head advantage. They’ve won four and lost one of their last 5 and have conceded 4 goals in the process.

Los Blancos seem to be finding the goals and we’ll check their scoring consistency in the game against Mallorca.

Their remaining fixtures could also see them get more points or drop some as in the case of Barcelona. Regardless, their destiny is presently in their hands.

This title race is fierce and could go to the wire. It’s an eventful title race for the La Liga title this season and this hasn’t been the case in recent times.

The league appears to be Real Madrid’s to lose presently but they should be careful as Barcelona will capitalize on any slip that will put them once again in pole position for the title.
