Witsel to miss Bundesliga clash against Wolfsburg

Borussia Dortmund travel to face Wolfsburg on Saturday for the second set of Bundesliga games after the return to competitive action but will be without midfielder Axel Witsel who will not be fit in time for the clash.

However, the likes of Emre Can and teenager Giovanni Reyna have returned to training and will be available for selection, Dortmund coach Lucien Favre revealed on Friday.

Witsel played no part in the 4 nil thrashing of Schalke at the Signal Iduna Park last weekend after the resumption of the season which had been on hold for more than two months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Belgium international is yet to recover from the injury that has kept him out of action since then. Lucien Favre disclosed this during a virtual news conference ahead of the game.

“Witsel will definitely not be there,”

“Can started yesterday with light training with the team and will train today as well.”

Highly-rated young sensation Reyna also missed the game against Schalke after sustaining an injury whilst warming up for the game. He’s now back in training and could be given a run-out during the game.

Dortmund are still second in the Bundesliga with 54 points, four behind Bayern Munich after both sides started on a winning note with clean sheets in the process.

Meanwhile, they’ll welcome Bayern Munich on Tuesday with a chance to close the points gap if they amass all three points.

Marco Reus is still not available and is yet to return to training after being sidelined with an adductor muscle injury for months now and his timeframe for return remains uncertain with 8 games remaining.

“Reus has not started training with the team but we still hope that he can come back as soon as possible and help until the end of the season,” Favre said.
