Barca legend Xavi Hernandez has refused the offer to immediately replace Ernesto Valverde at the managerial helm at the Camp Nou this season according to reports.
After two days of phone conversations and meetings, the Al Saad manager informed Barcelona’s sporting director Eric Abidal and CEO Oscar Grau that he would be open to taking over at the club next season.
Meanwhile, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is expected to engage in a long-overdue meeting with the club board on Monday where discussions will be had on everything that transpired.
According to sources, Valverde’s job was still safe regardless of the SuperCopa exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid in midweek. However, the club had a change of heart and sent Abidal and Grau to Qatar where they held meetings with Xavi thrice and also held a meeting with Ousmane Dembele.
Xavi has been continuously linked with the Barcelona job since he stopped playing for the club. However, he prefers to start a new project and not go behind Valverde’s back as he respects him.
Therefore, Valverde will oversee his side’s training on Monday morning as they prepare for next weekend’s La Liga game against Granada at the Camp Nou.
