Xavi wants a new deal for young sensation Gavi

Barcelona boss Xavi is hoping that the club’s new teenage sensation Gavi would agree to a new deal after playing a vital role for the first team in the ongoing season.

The 17-year-old midfielder has made 15 La Liga appearances for the Catalan giants this term and scored his first goal which was the winner in the hard-fought 3:2 victory against Elche last weekend.

In Xavi’s new days as Barca boss, he has had no choice but to rely on stars from the academy due to the club’s financial turmoil and is desperate that Gavi is tied down with a new deal as his present deal expires in the summer of 2023.

In a chat with Marca, he said: ‘We must act now to renew him (Gavi)’

‘If necessary, we will find a way to put money together.

‘He and Ansu, Pedri, Araujo are important for us. He is one of the future players of the club and we are working on his renewal.’

Other youngsters in the likes of Abde Ezzalzouli, 20, and Nico Gonzalez, 19, products of La Masia also need to extend their contracts with the club. Meanwhile, reports suggest that Barcelona are interested in a loan move for Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January.

The club need a new forward to lead the line after the retirement of Sergio Aguero last week and will delve into the transfer market once it opens in January.

The Catalans currently sit 8th in La Liga and trail league leaders Real Madrid by a whopping 15 points and maybe it’s safe to say that the race for the La Liga title is over for them.

They face second-placed Sevilla on Tuesday night and this is another big game where they are not overwhelming favorites as they used to be in the past. The odds assigned by bookmakers can attest to this.
