With the 2026 FIFA World Cup right around the corner, kicking off in June, fans are excited about both international soccer action and new opportunities to bet. One of those betting opportunities is via Asian handicap. Taking advantage of better odds and evening the odds between teams of varying strengths and totals makes betting on soccer extra exciting. Along with totals, here’s your guide to betting totals and Asian handicap markets.
How do Asian Handicap Bets Work
An Asian handicap bet is a popular betting market for soccer matches at the best betting sites. It’s designed to even the odds between two competing teams by assigning a handicap to the team that is considered to be the underdog. This can be done either by giving the underdog a certain number of goals at the top of the match or by subtracting goals from the team favored to win.
More In-Depth Examples
So, for example, let’s say team Nigeria is playing team South Africa. Sportsbook operators will assign Team South Africa a +1.5-goal handicap. What this does is if someone bets on South Africa and they win the game or lose by 1 goal, they win their wager. If someone bets on Nigeria and they win by 2 or more goals, then the customer wins their bet.
The Asian handicap simply adds on fractions of goals (.25 & .75) to the spread. So when a customer bets on a team at, say, +1.25, they are essentially putting down half a wager on +1 and the other half on +1.5. If the team they bet on loses by 1 goal, they push on +1 and win their +1.5. If the team they bet on ties 0-0, they win both bets.
If that team loses by 2+ goals, then you lose both bets because you didn’t hit either spread. Keep in mind that, while this bet shows up as one play on a betting ticket, it is actually two bets lumped into one that do not affect each other.
The Half Win
Suppose you place a wager on Manchester United -1.75 goals. The game ends 3-1 in Manchester United’s favor. They covered by winning two goals. You would win your Manchester United -1.5 portion of the bet, and push your Manchester City -2 portion of the bet since they won by exactly 2 goals, not more.
If you wagered at -110 odds, you would net $19.09 on the first portion of your wager, and you would get back the original $10 bet for the push portion of the wager. That means you would make a profit of $9.09 on the original wager. This example applies to international sportsbooks that use their respective currencies, but hopefully, you get the point.
The Half Loss
If you had placed an Asian handicap goal line wager of Manchester United -2.25 and the final score was 3-1, you would push your Manchester United -2 portion of the bet, getting back your original $10 wager since they won by 2.0 goals. Your Manchester United -2.5 portion would lose, costing you $10 of your original wager.
Asian Goal Line
An Asian goal line bet is another way to wager on how many total goals will be notched in a soccer game. Just like an Over/Under total bet, the Asian goal line bet allows you to wager if a game will go over the Total offered or under. However, instead of being split by a half-goal like a traditional Over/Under wager would be, it allows you to wager on a combination of half-goals and whole goals by splitting up the wager just like an Asian handicap bet.
