Sticking with the final day of the Iraq Stars League, Al Mosul hosts Al-Qassim in a fixture that promises fireworks, largely due to the visitors’ catastrophic defensive record. To understand the trajectory of this game, you only have to look at their previous encounter in January. In a chaotic, end-to-end thriller, Al Mosul went on the road and snatched a 3-2 victory. Since then, the defensive issues plaguing Al-Qassim have only multiplied, culminating in a recent string of heavy defeats, including a brutal 5-2 thrashing at the hands of Naft Missan.
Al-Qassim’s backline is currently suffering from a severe lack of organization. They consistently fail to track late runners into the box and struggle to clear their lines under pressure, leading to an alarmingly high expected goals against (xGA) metric over their last five outings. For Al Mosul, this represents a golden opportunity to end their domestic campaign on a high note in front of their home supporters. While Al Mosul isn’t necessarily the most prolific attacking side in the division, they are ruthlessly efficient when gifted high-quality chances something Al-Qassim’s defense does on a weekly basis.
The tactical setup heavily favors the hosts. Al Mosul likes to build out from the back and exploit the wide areas, a strategy that will stretch an already fractured Al-Qassim defense to its breaking point. Given the visitors’ current form leaking goals at an unsustainable rate and struggling with basic defensive cohesion it is incredibly difficult to envision a scenario where they keep a clean sheet. Al Mosul has the blueprint to break them down, and the home advantage will only amplify their attacking output.
