Staying in the Faroe Islands, we have Vikingur Gota hosting Skala Itrottarfelag. Back in April, these two sides bored everyone in the stadium with a flat 0-0 draw at Skala’s ground. But circumstances have changed drastically since that stalemate. Vikingur is currently sitting comfortably in fourth place, grinding out results and making themselves incredibly hard to beat. They haven’t lost in their last five matches, though four of those were frustrating draws. They desperately need to start converting those single points into three points if they want to push into the European qualification spots.
Skala, on the other hand, is struggling horribly in ninth place. They have only managed one win all season and have scored a pathetic eight goals in 10 matches. Skala’s attack is entirely toothless, which means Vikingur’s defense shouldn’t be under much genuine threat today. The pressure is entirely on Vikingur to deliver a commanding win in front of their home fans. Dropping points against a relegation-threatened team at home is unacceptable for a club with top-three ambitions. Skala will likely try to replicate their April performance by sitting deep and playing for another 0-0 draw. But Vikingur has learned from that highly frustrating encounter. Playing at home gives them the advantage of a wider pitch and a faster playing surface, allowing their wingers to stretch Skala’s defense to the breaking point. Skala has zero confidence when crossing the halfway line.
Their main striker looks completely isolated in every match, and their midfield struggles to string more than three passes together under pressure. Vikingur knows they let Skala off the hook last time, and they will be eager to correct that mistake. The home side’s manager has undoubtedly spent the week running attacking drills to break down a packed penalty box. Vikingur has superior technical ability and the motivation of pushing up the table.
