La Liga sides must re-strategize ahead of next season’s UCL

The 2020/21 UEFA Champions League has reached its quarterfinal stage and the going can only get tough for the sides that have made it thus far in the competition. However, one country, whose clubs have been mainstays in this stage of the competition saw the majority of their clubs fall short this season and it may just be a one-off, hopefully so. La Liga clubs have been dominant in the UCL in the past decade but the ongoing season has seen them flatter to deceive, with just one club making it past the round of 16 stage. Real Madrid will be the only club representing Spain any further in the competition and if the La Liga is to have any hopes of boasting of their clubs' triumph in the competition, then all hope lies on Los Blancos. Chelsea vs Atletico Madrid – We’ll see an attack-minded Simeone side

All eyes will be on Stamford Bridge in London when Diego Simeone and his men come with the fight against the Thomas Tuchel-led side on Wednesday night for a place in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. The Blues lead the tie 1 nil via an Olivier Giroud goal in the first leg and will be looking to consolidate on the result and avoid a loss at home against the Rojiblancos to secure a place in the next stage of the competition. Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, need a win to seal a place as a draw won't cut it for them. The exciting thing about this matchup, in my opinion, is that the Spanish side will be forced to come out and play attacking football. We've seen such cases on the pitch with regards to full-time results as well as in the pursuit of domestic league titles across the major football leagues, amongst others. We're seeing one instance in the 2020/21 La Liga season where most of us thought that Diego Simeone's impressive Atletico Madrid had run away with the league title as major and perennial contenders in the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid continued to falter. However, they won't be running away with it because we now have a tough and competitive race for the title. Therefore, this begs the question; Can Atletico Madrid overcome the pressure being mounted by the two teams dir...

Atletico Madrid considering move for Moussa Dembele

Reports suggest that Moussa Dembele may be close to a January exit from Ligue 1 outfit Lyon and this would be an unexpected but welcome development for his former club Celtic with regards to a transfer windfall. The 24-year-old striker who rose to the limelight with the likes of Fulham and Celtic before making the move to Lyon has been heavily linked with a move to La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid. Atletico Madrid are reportedly in the market for a new striker as they seek a replacement for Diego Costa, who canceled his deal with the club earlier this month. It can be recalled that Lyon shelled out £19 million for Moussa Dembele at the end of the Scottish transfer window in 2018 to acquire him from Celtic. The deal included a sell-on clause which ensures that the Hoops will recei...

Trippier hits back at Klopp for criticizing Atletico’s style of play

Kieran Trippier has hit back at Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp for criticizing Atletico Madrid's style of play, claiming that winning matters most. According to Klopp, the La Liga outfit could play proper football with the talented players at their disposal instead of sitting back so much after their UCL round-of-16 triumph over the Reds. Diego Simeone's men won 3:2 at Anfield with just 29% possession but Trippier came to the defense of their tactics, pointing out that it proved effective over the two legs and on the night. “People have this perception that we’re a defensive side, but I think they’re getting too carried away with the way we played against Liverpool,” said the Atletico and Three Lions defender. “If you go there and go toe-to-toe with Liverpool, you’re going to get bea...

Klopp not blaming Adrian for errors which led to Liverpool’s elimination

Jurgen Klopp has insisted that he does not blame goalkeeper Adrian for his mistake which allowed Atletico Madrid to get back into the game and end Liverpool's reign as European champions. The Reds were ahead on aggregate after Roberto Firmino's goal only for Adrain to fluff a kick to Joao Felix with Marcos Llorente subsequently scoring from the pass that ensued. Llorente went on to score again before another substitute Alvaro Morata scored the winner in the 120th minute for Diego Simeone's men to drive the spear further into Anfield hearts. "He's a man and he knows that's how it is. We will not blame him for a second - what you (the media) do, I don't know but stay respectful, that would be really nice," said Klopp, who finally lost his first two-legged European tie since taking t...

Robertson – Atletico celebrated like they have won the tie

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has slammed Atletico Madrid after their 1 nil win against the Reds in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. The La Liga outfit took the lead in the first leg of the two-legged tie at the Wanda Metropolitano with a 1 nil victory and Robertson believed they felt the job was done. He said: "That [performance is] what [Simeone] is. When you're not playing against him it is probably great to watch, but we have no problem with it. "They celebrated as if they had won the tie. But let's see. We have some weeks then they come to Anfield. We know our fans will be there, so it is up to them to come as well." Klopp – Simeone won’t be happy he’s facing Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted that his side faces a tough task against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. However, he pointed out that his opponent in the dugout Diego Simeone won't be happy he's facing Liverpool. The Reds topped their group ahead of Serie A side Napoli and will be looking to defend their UCL title when they visit the Wanda Metrop[oplitano, where they emerged victoriously in last season's UCL competition. He noted that the stage only comprised teams from the top 5 leagues in Europe, thereby making it a very tough stage of the competition. “It’s an interesting draw,” Klopp told his club’s official website.
