McClaren – England are now contenders for every tournament

England boss Gareth Southgate has revived the hopes of English fans in the Three Lions after their impressive run to the Euro 2020 final which they lost to Italy on penalties at Wembley. This has resulted in a claim by former national team boss Steve McClaren that the Three Lions will be contenders for any tournament they play in. Their dream to win the Euros for the first time as well as their first major trophy in 55 years was quashed after the loss to the Azzurri on penalties. However, McClaren pointed out that Southgate's team had learned valuable lessons from the encounter as well as from the 2018 World Cup semi-final defeat to Croatia. There was no reason to sub off Grealish against Denmark

Jose Mourinho has said that Gareth Southgate didn't have any reason to substitute Jack Grealish during England's Euro 2020 semi-final win against Denmark at Wembley. The Aston Villa playmaker started the game on the bench and was subbed on in the 69th minute when the game was 1 all. The Three Lions then went ahead in the first half of extra time via Harry Kane's penalty rebound, after which Southgate chose to replace Grealish with Kieran Trippier in an attempt to close the game. After the game, the England boss admitted that he was keen to bring on an extra defender to nullify Denmark's attacking threat but Mourinho believes that the Danes were already exhausted, and keeping Grealish on would have boosted England's chances of grabbing a third goal in the game. ‘I didn’t like it...

The final of the Euro 2020 tournament has been decided and England will face Italy at Wembley on Sunday 11 for the holy grail of European football at the international level and this could pass for a Serie A vs Premier League contest. It can be recalled that Italy breezed past Spain on penalties in a 4:2 win after the match ended 1 all in regulation time. England also had to wait till extra time to see off Denmark after Harry Kane missed a penalty and converted the rebound to seal a 2:1 win for the Three Lions. A look at past winners shows that both sides have not been amongst the best of the best with regards to the most triumphs in the competition. Euro 2020 – England have found their scoring boots at the best time

England were the most ruthless team in the quarter-finals of the Euro 2020 tournament as they thrashed Ukraine 4 nil to book a place in the last 4 against Denmark. The Three Lions have been short of goals in the competition but seem to have come to life in attack in the knockout stages of the competition and this bodes well in their quest to emerge triumphantly in the competition. Gareth Southgate's men progressed from the group stages with low-scoring encounters with Raheem Sterling establishing himself as the key man for the goals in the group stages. They scored just 2 goals as they beat Croatia and The Czech Republic 1 nil respectively, alongside a goalless draw against Scotland. Harry Kane was not among the goals, seemed out of form in the early stages of the competition, ...

Hamann – They get the job done when the chips are down

Ahead of the crunch fixture between England and Germany at Wembley on Tuesday, Dietmar Hamann is of the opinion that the pragmatic Germans will able to park the hype and get the job done against the Three Lions. The two sides will meet for the 8th time at a major tournament and there are high hopes that the game will add to the remarkable drama that has been experienced in the competition thus far. Hamann believes that England coach Gareth Southgate will play it safe and that it's a decision that would favor the Germans. He made this known in a chat with RTE's Morning Ireland. "The English have not been the most adventurous," he told RTÉ's Morning Ireland. "We were in one [game] against Portugal so I hope we haven't used up all our goals up yet and we'll see a few tonight! "It...

From the European Championship archive: that fateful night at Wembley

Those significant words that have echoed around Wembley Stadium ever since Euro 96 – and been etched in football anthem folklore. Of course, with England hosting the European Championships 25 years ago, optimism was high. And as we gear up to the business end of this year’s tournament, there still is that level of expectation. On Wednesday night, England found out their opponents in the round of 16 – old foes Germany. The Germans had finished runners-up in Group F, dubbed the Group of Death – and Gareth Southgate’s side could have faced any one of France, Germany, Portugal, or even Hungary who caused a scare in their final group game – and went ahead twice against the Germans. As it is, the England v Germany betting odds are in the favor of England and with the match being played at ...

They'll now wait to know their opponent in the next round which will be decided today after the teams in Group F, the group of death settle scores with each other. They'll face the team that finishes second in Group F. Regardless, I'd like to take a look at the performances of the Three Lions' players in the competition and who has been the one producing the goods in terms of results. Ben White replaces Trent Alexander-Arnold for the Euros

Brighton and Hove Albion defender Ben White has been chosen to replace Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold in England's 26-man squad for Euro 2020. His inclusion ensures that the Three Lions have more depth in the center of defense as Gareth Southgate continues to sweat over the fitness of Harry Maguire ahead of the group stages of the tournament. It can be recalled that White initially didn't make the squad after getting his first international call-up and made his debut for the Three Lions in the 1 win against Austria on Wednesday. Regardless, the 23-year-old started Sunday's win against Romania and played for 90 minutes. It can also be recalled that he was named Brighton's player of the season for the 2020/21 campaign earlier the same day. His selection means that Southgate h...

England fixtures threatened after 3 players test positive for coronavirus

The Three Lions' doubleheader against Iceland and Denmark is in doubt after at least three of Gareth Southgate's squad tested positive for coronavirus based on reports. There has been an increase in the number of cases in the Premier League in recent times with the likes of Man United's Paul Pogba and Tottenham Hotspur's Tanguy Ndombele testing positive for the virus over the past 24 hours. A report from Daily Mail has now suggested that the French players are not the only players affected with claims that three members of the England squad have tested positive. This development puts their upcoming fixtures against Iceland and Denmark in doubt and both games are set to take place in September. The likes of Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham have already been quarantined after coming in...

England boss Gareth Southgate takes 30% pay cut

England manager Gareth Southgate has taken a 30% pay cut as the Football Association considers the government's furlough scheme as a contingency plan during the coronavirus pandemic. Southgate reportedly earns £3m a year and is one of the FA's highest earners who has agreed to the reduction as they seek to deal with the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 crisis. Meanwhile, employees who earn £50,000 or more per year will make do with a temporary pay-cut of 7.5% while senior management will earn 15% less. In a statement, the FA predicted that the postponement of England internationals, FA Cup games and Wembley events would cost £100m, but it "could easily exceed £150m depending on the duration of the government's necessary medical measures".
