Ten Hag may be best remembered for his incredible run with Ajax, but his coaching career spans across several notable clubs. In this guide, we take you through every team he has managed, what he achieved, what went wrong, and what comes next.
Erik Ten Hag Teams Coached
Here are the teams Erik Ten Hag has coached so far.
- Go Ahead Eagles
- Bayern Munich II
- Utrecht
- Ajax
- Manchester United
- Bayer Leverkusen
1. Go Ahead Eagles – (2012-2013)
It can be recalled that he was appointed in 2012 by Marc Overmars, who was then a shareholder of the Eerste Divisie side. Erik Ten Hag, during his management at the club and his first managerial career in his life, led the Eerste Divisie side to their very first promotion to the Netherlands’ top league, the Eredivisie, in seventeen (17) years.
The manager, who was just 42 years old, made a flying start as he is well known for considering even the minor details in his management.
2. Bayern Munich II – (2013-2015)
Having brought Netherland’s side, Go Ahead Eagles, to enjoy a top flight in the Eredivisie in 2013 following their 17-year stay in the Eerste Divisie, Erik Ten Hag began aspiring for more managerial roles.
This led him to the German side Bayern Munich II, where he had to coach the Bayern Munich reserve team, which was playing in the Regionalliga Bayern, having become runners-up in the 2012-2013 season.
At Bayern Munich II, Erik Ten Hag helped the German side to a 2013-2014 Regionalliga Bayern title, having been runners-up in the 2012-2013 season.
During his time at Bayern Munich, he had the opportunity to work with current Manchester City coach and tactician Pep Guardiola, who was managing the senior side of the German club, Bayern Munich, at the time.

3. FC Utrecht – (2015-2017)
Following his decision to leave the German side, Erik Ten Hag decided to return to management at a senior side, albeit it was a return to the Netherlands. Ten Hag was appointed by Eredivisie side Utrecht as a manager and as a sporting director, where he helped the club to a fifth-place finish in his first season (2015-2016).
They also made a fourth-place finish in his second season (2016-2017) when the Netherlands side made a return to European football, the UEFA Europa League.
4. Ajax – (2017-2022)
Having dismissed their then manager, Marcel Keizer, Eredivisie giants Ajax appointed Erik Ten Hag on the 21st of December, 2017, as his replacement.
At Ajax, Erik Ten Hag enjoyed the best years of his managerial career so far, reaching the 2018-2019 UEFA Champions League semi-final, where he was defeated by English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, 3-3 on aggregate.

It can be recalled that they earlier defeated Real Madrid 1-4 at the Santiago Bernabeu to progress to the last four stages of the UCL. He also won his first trophy as a manager in the 2018–19 KNVB Cup, where they defeated Willem II in the final.
The manager went on to win several Eredivisie titles during his time at the club and made several UEFA Champions League appearances where his side was a thorn in the flesh, before moving on to the English Premier League to become Manchester United manager.
5. Manchester United – (2022-2024)
Having hunted for a manager to take over from Ralf Rangnick, who was appointed as the interim Manchester United manager following the sack of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United appointed Erik Ten Hag to take over the helm at the club.
However, the manager’s time at the club did not begin with a flying start as he was defeated 1-2 by Brighton at the Old Trafford stadium despite having a brilliant preseason, which included a 4-0 win against league rivals Liverpool.
The manager went on to suffer a 4-0 defeat against Brentford despite fielding a very strong starting eleven. His first English Premier League win at Manchester United was hard fought, and it came against Southampton when the host team was defeated 0-1 by the red Manchester side. Erik Ten Hag is looking to have a great time at the club as he looks to end their trophy drought.

6. Bayer Leverkusen (2025 – 2025)
Erik ten Hag took over as Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach in July 2025, following Xabi Alonso’s departure. In his first home match, Leverkusen lost 2-1 to Hoffenheim, and players were left surprised when Ten Hag skipped the pre-game talk.
Things got worse after a 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen, where they gave up a two-goal lead. On September 1, 2025, Leverkusen let him go after just two league games. This was the shortest tenure ever for a Bundesliga coach. Kasper Hjulmand replaced him days later.
Conclusion
In his managerial career, Erik Ten Hag has coached so far. However, his best was at Ajax, where he managed to win several league titles and a few other domestic trophies.
Regardless, we, alongside other football enthusiasts, are looking to see what the Dutchman will achieve more later in his coaching career.
