Complete CAF Confederation Cup Winners List (All-Time)

This guide provides a complete list of all-time CAF Confederation Cup winners. The CAF Confederation Cup is a yearly football club tournament formed in 2004 through a merger of the CAF Cup and the African Cup Winners’ Cup.

It is the second-tier African club football competition, sitting below the CAF Champions League. This tournament is managed by CAF, and teams qualify based on their performance in national leagues and cup competitions.

Since its inception in 1964 as the African Cup of Champions Club, the trophy’s first holder was Cameroon’s Oryx Douala.

Morocco boasts the most winning clubs, with five teams clinching the title. Thirteen clubs have won the competition, five of which have secured victory more than once. Currently, USM Alger is the defending champions, having defeated Young Africans in the 2023 final.

1. CS Sfaxien – (4 Titles)

CS Sfaxien

CSS, also known as Club Sportif Sfaxien is a top football club In Tunisia with a rich history, founded way back in 1928.

They’ve won the CAF Confederation Cup four times, making them one of the most successful clubs in the tournament’s history.

Over the years, CSS has seen many successes. They won their first major title, the Tunisian League, in 1978. Then, in 1998, they won the CAF Cup for the first time.

In 2007, they won the CAF Confederation Cup, and in 2008, they became the most successful club in the tournament’s recent history by winning it again.

CSS continued their success in the following years, winning the Tunisian Cup in 2009 and securing their third CAF Confederation Cup title in 2013.

They’ve been consistent contenders, participating in competitions like the CAF Confederation Cup in 2017. In the 2018–19 season, CSS once again triumphed in the Tunisian Cup to add to their impressive trophy cabinet. Their most recent Tunisian FA Cup win was in June 2021, making It their sixth win in the competition.

2. Etoile Sportive du Sahel – (4 Titles)

Etoile Sportive du Sahel, based in Tunisia is one of the football clubs to have won the most CAF Confederation Cup. It all began in 1925 at a meeting held in a French-Tunisian school in Sousse.

Chedli Boujemla was chosen as the first chairman, and the club settled on the name ‘L’Étoile Sportive du Sahel’ to represent a wider area than just Sousse.

In 1926, the club entered the Tunisian Football Federation. Despite facing initial challenges, the team gradually improved.

By the 1930s, they were winning regional championships and gaining recognition. During World War II, sports activities were disrupted, but ESS continued to strive.

The club has enjoyed stability and success, winning its first Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 title in 1950. And, the years following Tunisia’s independence in 1956 were seen by both triumphs and difficulties.

Despite a brief dissolution in 1961 due to incidents during a match, ESS bounced back stronger. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, under coaches like Božidar Drenovac and Abdelmajid Chetali, ESS won league titles and Tunisian Cups. They even ventured into Maghreb competitions to show their talent on a regional level.

3. Raja Club Athletic – (3 Titles)

Raja Club Athletic is a famous football team from Casablanca, Morocco. They’ve been around since 1949 and are loved by fans all over the country.

Raja is one of the teams that started Botola, the top football league in Morocco. Since they joined in 1956, they’ve never been sent down to a lower league, showing how good they are.

In the late 1980s, Raja became a big part of African football. They won the CAF Champions League three times back then.

Also, they were unbeatable in their league, winning it seven times in just ten years. During that time, Raja had some incredible players like Mustapha Moustawdaa, Mustapha Chadili, Salaheddine Bassir, and Abdellatif Jrindou.

These guys made Raja one of the best teams in Africa during the 1990s. Raja didn’t just win in Morocco; they also did well in international competitions.

And, they’ve never been relegated to a lower league in 55 seasons. JS Kabylie also has achieved significant success at the international level.

They’ve won the CAF Champions League twice, in 1981 and 1990, and the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1995. Additionally, they clinched the CAF Cup three times consecutively from 2000 to 2002, totaling 28 major trophies, a record in Algeria.

JS Kabylie holds a special place in Algerian and African football history as they’re considered one of the top clubs in Africa.

5. TP Mazembe – (2 Titles)

TP Mazembe is the fifth team to have won the most CAF Confederation Cup, having won It in 2016 and 2017. Tout Puissant Mazembe started in 1939 as Saint Georges FC, a team formed by monks at the Institut Saint-Boniface school in Lubumbashi.

Over time, the club changed its name and faced challenges, but it never gave up. In the late 1960s, TP Mazembe made history, winning the African Cup of Champions twice in a row.

They were the first team ever to do this. Even after Congo gained independence in 1960, the club kept going strong. With good leadership, TP Mazembe won the CAF Champions League in 2009 to mark their return to the top.

Under new ownership, TP Mazembe continued to impress. They won the CAF Champions League again in 2010 and 2015.
