UCL Preview – Can Chelsea start off on a high against Sevilla?

Chelsea welcome Sevilla to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday for their first group game of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League. This is preceded by their capitulation against Southampton in the same venue a few days ago in the Premier League. The Blues looked to have the game under control till a mistake from Kai Havertz saw the Saints pull one back in the closing stages of the first half after a Timo Werner brace. The game eventually ended 3 all to Chelsea's disadvantage, as they were 2 nil up just before halftime. Frank Lampard and his men will turn their attentions to the UEFA Champions League as Julen Lopetegui and his men come visiting, off the back of a 1 nil La Liga loss to Granada away from home. The two sides are the favorites in the group on paper and should do enough to progress...

Chelsea tried to sign Ter Stegen from Barcelona

Chelsea now have the likes of Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and veteran Willy Caballero as goalkeepers who will battle for a regular place between the sticks this season.  However, reports have emerged that the Blues approached to sign Marc-Andre ter Stegen from Barcelona before settling for newcomer Edouard Mendy. Frank Lampard prioritized signing a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window after Kepa failed to convince the Englishman with his performances between the sticks last season. The Spain international was not very convincing and this resulted in him being dropped for a period including the FA Cup final last season. Who is to blame for Chelsea’s defensive woes?

The 2020/21 Premier League season will see clubs and managers face lots of criticisms, and this is already the case after a few games into the season. One of the bearers of major criticisms this season will surely be Chelsea boss Frank Lampard with regards to the defensive mediocrity of his side thus far. The Chelsea backline have been poor thus far with just one clean sheet and major average performances in defense. The clean sheet was not even down to the Blues' defensive prowess but to Willy Caballero's decent show against Championship side Barnsley that created some good chances in the EFL Cup game. The veteran Argentine shot-stopper was hailed after the game but saw himself conceding three goals in the first 30 minutes of the Premier League game against newly-promoted side...

Chelsea vs Liverpool preview – First big game of the season

It's still early days in the 2020/21 Premier League season with the Matchday 2's fixtures yet to be executed, but we have a cracker on our hands already as Chelsea will welcome defending Champions Liverpool to Stamford Bridge on Sunday. I'm sure a good number of football fans can still recollect how the last Premier League game between these two sides panned out although it was at Anfield. A whopping eight goals were scored the last time they met with the Reds emerging victoriously with a 5:3 win in an enthralling game. Regardless, both sides will face each other coming off the back of garnering maximum points in their opening game of the season. Liverpool had to rely on an 88th-minute penalty converted by hat-trick hero Mohammed Salah to beat newly-promoted Leeds United 4:3 at An...

How the transfer ban favored Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri anticipated a sinking ship at Chelsea after they were hit with a transfer ban and made the move to Juventus in an unexpected departure. This left the Blues with an uncertain future and they had to settle down with a rookie Frank Lampard who took over, after just one professional-managerial season with Championship side Derby County. The future didn't appear to hold much for Chelsea, and more so with the departure of the talismanic Belgian Eden Hazard who jumped ship to Real Madrid in what he described as a dream move. With Frank Lampard at the helm amid a transfer ban, there were doubts on if Lampard and his boys would finish in the top 4. The Englishman came in and put some reliance on youth players like Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, James Reece, Billy...

Chelsea slap £80m price tag on Kante amid Conte interest

Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte is interested in a reunion with Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante but Chelsea will only consider an exit for the French midfielder if a bid close to £80m is made. It can be recalled that Conte and Kante won the Premier League title together when the latter was in charge at Chelsea and the Italian is keen to have Kante in his ranks as he attempts to battle Juventus' dominance in the Serie A. Kante's influence at Stamford Bridge has diminished since Lampard took over but the English manager is not keen to see him leave as he builds a new exciting team at Stamford Bridge. Regardless, the Blues have slapped an £80m price tag on the 29-year-old Frenchman, possibly ruling out an exit to Inter. Meanwhile, the Blues have been on a spending spree and have al...

Chelsea can now begin official moves for Kai Havertz

Chelsea have been heavily linked with a move for Bayern Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz after completing deals for the likes of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech ahead of the 2020/21 season. There has been no headway thus far but it is believed that a move could be close according to Fabrizio Romano. The deal was on hold due to dispute on transfer fee as well as the player's involvement with Leverkusen for the remainder of the Europa League. This was not the case with Werner who left RB Leipzig after signing for the Blues although they are still in the Champions League. Regardless, Leverkusen insisted that Havertz must finish the season with them. The Oldies are gradually being phased out for the Newbies

The young managers are beginning to take over from the old guard in most of the elite clubs in Europe. It's safe to say that the prestigious managers are being phased out gradually. The players who made their mark, playing for some of the elite clubs in Europe are assuming the managerial helm at those clubs. It comes as no major surprise going by the precedent that has been set by successful pioneers. The likes of Pep Guardiola and Zinedine Zidane are prime examples. Guardiola replaced Frank Rijkaard at Barcelona years back and built a very formidable Barcelona side that conquered Europe and world club football for years before he departed from the club.  This was a major feat for a rookie manager and his achievement with the Barcelona side will reverberate in the world of footbal...

Blow for Chelsea in pursuit of Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz

Chelsea have already seen the arrivals of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and Timo Werner from RB Leipzig ahead of the 2020/21 season. They've been heavily linked with Bayern Leverkusen's Kai Havertz in a deal that sources claim is as good as done. However, the Blues have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of the midfielder as Bayern Leverkusen have insisted that Kai Havterz won't leave until they are done with their Europa League exertions next month. Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is keen to secure a deal for the 21-year-old so he can settle quickly in West London in preparation for the upcoming season which begins in September. However, Leverkusen director Rudi Voller has revealed that nothing is cast in stone and that Havertz will participate in the climax of the Europa League. READ: Ba...

Abraham seemingly takes a swipe at Lampard’s attack-minded tactics

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has seemingly taken a swipe at manager Frank Lampard after the Blues were thrashed 3 nil by Sheffield United on Saturday. Speaking shortly after the game whose result put their top 4 hopes in doubt, the forward admitted that Chelsea's tactics were too attack-minded and left the defense vulnerable. Although he did not outrightly criticize Frank Lampard's tactical decisions, his comments insinuated that the way the game was approached contributed to the defeat. In an interview with Stadium Astro, in quotes by Metro, when asked if Chelsea needed a change in style, he replied: “Yeah, of course it’s fair. “We know that ourselves, we throw so many bodies forward. “We’re very vulnerable when we lose the ball higher up the pitch and that’s something ...
